Hello and a question. (Updated to include images)

Heyas. Newbie to the boards here.

I have a question regarding the Lincoln cent in my 2003 Silver Proof Set.

I didn't notice this when I first got the set, but a couple weeks ago I was looking through my coins and was looking at the 2003 set and saw that the cent piece had some really dark brown markings on it. There are about four of them on the shoulder, collar, and going on up into Lincoln's neck from the collar.

Without pictures, I'm sure you can't tell me much. I tried scanning it in, but between the angle the cent is in the holder and the plastic, the scan turned out very blurry, at best. I don't have a digital camera, but will see if I can get a friend to help me out on that tomorrow.

Anyway, until I can get a photo of the coin up, anyone have any conjectures on what might have caused something like this to happen?

*** Edit: Update ***

I don't know for sure wether the marks were there when I received the coins or not. I had bought three sets and when I initially looked at them, I was looking primarily at the state quarters and really didn't pay much attention to the other coins until just a few weeks ago. I'm guessing it was already there when it was shipped to me.

Ok, trying to add in the images...hope it works!

Below should be a picture of the coin and two magnifications of it.

    Howdy. image

You've got a funny (if rather frightening!) forum name! image

I couldn't really guess what the markings on your cent are without seeing a pic, but maybe somebody else will have an idea.

There are a number of reasons for such unusual toning: improper alloy mix, improper storage (excessive humidity) etc....

It's impossible to say for certain without examining the coin.

Welcome! And my best guess is that it looks a little like damage.

    Welcome to the boards!

Isn't that cent just like the rare cent that recently sold for $152.50 on ebay? image

  • Thanks for the welcome.

And if by the "rare" cent you mean the one with the "weak" three that all of them seem to have, then yes. image

I just took another look at the coin and saw there was some additional damage to the rim (which you can't see too well in the picture I took - it is a dark spot on the rim just like the others are) just under the word Liberty on the left hand side.

Anyway, you think I should send the set back in because of the damage or just keep it?

If you're not happy or satisfied with it, send it back.
