1969 Mint Sets

Question regarding the obverse strike on 69 Washingtons. I have a few mint sets from 69 that I purchased from the mint and all of the Washingtons have a very weak obverse strike. There is almost no detail in Washington's hair. Is this normal for the 69 quarters or do I have some substandard sets? Thanks in advance for any expertise.image

The relief on these coins is nearly the same as for the earlier issues. There should
be quite a bit of detail in the hair and there normally is on mint set coins. These sets
are assembled so that nearly consecutive coins from a die will end up in a shipment.
It sounds probable that you simply got a bad run of this coin. The mint set 1969 quar-
ter is often well struck and strike flaws typically are in the lettering near the rim on
either side. The coin is difficult in high grade primarily due to an extreme amount of
marking. Much of this marking is actually planchet flaws which haven't been completely
    struck out.

    Gary,

I hope you're not comparing the hair detail on these to coins minted from 1991 forward. They changed the obverse die that year and the hair is far more detailed than the previous die.

  • Russ,
I am comparing them to early BU silvers, which were not all that sharp in the hair area. I think Cladking has given me the answer for my coins. The reverse strikes are great, but the obverse on both the P and d mints are weak. The P's are the worst. Thanks for the responses.

I have a dozen or so 69 mint sets, I have decided they were all struck using some really shoddy dies.
