In hand, the coin probably looks a bit different in the light, but to me it looks good...even if it is artificially toned. It's not like some of the retoned bust coinage that looks like it was shined up and then painted around the rims.

It may have been heavily smoked and then wiped, then smoked again.

Wow, it doesn't look bad. The dark toning is tight around the letters and stars. Often, I'll see a retoned coin with dark fields and light areas against the stars and letters. The areas that should be dark are light. This one just has a funny color.

I just thought this might be a bit interesting. We always see the AT Morgan and Peace$ all lit up. But they do mess with other coins as well. I wonder how many of these type coins slip through, when the services and collectors are looking at the Morgans?

By "slip through" do you mean graded as NT?

I would venture to guess not many, at least not at PCGS or NGC.

Yes that is what I was referring to. And also.... are collectors looking for AT on this type of coin or others?
Or do we just pay attention to the wild colored ones, as they are the most sought after.

it's an obvious bleach job, 1 of the easiest a-t's for silver. btw, you did NOT get hosed on the net-grade. that coin does not have au-details, it has ef+ details. anacs gave you an appropirate mkt-grade on that coin, imo.

You're probably corect on the bleach job theory. BTW... I DO NOT own the coin. I merely pulled it from the Heritage archives.

Usually with these coins the toning was to cover something up. I wonder what it was.......

I think around the stars and letters it looks original. And the AT was applied to cover up problems that could have been from a previous cleaning or something. Hey you think they applied fake dirt to it?
