Weekend Poll: How often do you buy a coin that is not part of a series you collect?

Most collectors here are specialists, even those that that collect type sets, seem to have a specialty approach to it. My two most recent purchases, a large cent purchased at a local show last month and the 1860-P $10 purchased in a Heritage live auction do not actually fit the focus of my collection (Dahlonega half eagles and New Orleans eagles and New Orleans gold, in general), but I liked them, so I bought them.

There are 2 approaches that coaches use in the draft;
1. Fill a need, if your weakest position is say at quarterback, you pick the best available quarterback in the draft, even if you see other athletes at guard or tackle that are better athletes [spelling?]
2. Take the best available athlete in the draft, then maybe trade up if your already strong in the position or at least have talent in that position.
Obviously if someones focus is only on a very few series that is like the coach who only fills a need, but this type of narrow thinking might cause you to pass on exceptional coins at a time when you dont find one in a series you happen to be looking for.
On the other hand, lets say a hypothetical collector is looking mainly for eye appealing mint state barber quarters and halves, if this "imaginary" collector doesn't find any at a given time that he likes, should he pass on a beautifull chochlate brown large cent with clean surfaces and great luster ?

On the other hand, discipline, focus, expertise, and money are necessary ingredients to complete a series. Are we then our own worst enemy in trying to achieve our goals?
