Shrink-wrapped rolls question, How long have they been being used?

I saw some 1981-D Lincoln cents on Ebay that were in the plastic shrink-wrapped rolls. But I can't remember ever seeing any of those type of rolls untill just a few years ago. Does anyone know when the mint or Brinks or the Fed-reserve banks started using them ? Thanks for any replies.

The fed no longer wraps coins. I believe Brinks was the first to use the shrink
wrapped plastic back in the mid-70's. They didn't start getting pretty common
until about the early to mid '80's. Now they are ubiquitous in this area. I've not
seen a new shotgun roll in years. (around '94)

  • I have shrink wrapped rolls of uncirculated Denver cents back to 1988, but I'm sure shrink wrapped rolls go back further than that. image
