Tampa show report: A small, but brisk show. I went with a few forum members. Small show perspecti

The hobby experience is always enhanced when shared with others as well as forum members. I was priveledged today to spend the morning and afternoon at the Tampa show at the Holiday Inn a block away from Raymond James Stadium. (Where the Buccs win!).
This is a robust 35 table show and is held quaterly on a regular basis. There were alot of local and regional dealers as well as faces that would be familiar to many here. I went with Morganluver, James, and Rich Renaud. Scott (GB---..---) also jointed us a little later on. We had breakfast at a local diner a few blocks away. A show experience is always better on a full stomach.
There was brisk activity from 10am-1pm, which were the times we were there. Morgan dollars and 19th century type rule this show. Although there is alot of modern material in dealers cases as well as foreign and more esoteric stuff, the dealer makeup consists of those older and traditional dealers who could care less about toning and moderns in particular. They are grey sheet and blue sheet dealers who care about , (what can I buy it for?, and what can I sell it for?).
This presents challenges for those who want to sell or trade more esoteric material, but also presents us with opportunity to buy quality-premium coins at generic prices, ie, toning, die varieties, etc, etc.
As a whole, dealers are becoming more intune and sensitive to market forces that demand toned coin recognition and acknowledgement of the modern market, but alot of dealers are slow or unwilling to adapt.
The coin show had a raffle and Morganluver won. I must commend Richard (Morganluver) for his wonderful gesture of turning over his prize to a YN. The smile on the child's face almost brought a tear to my eye. The good guys are still around and never loose hope in the future of this hobby, as long as we have good mentors and good students.
I was also able to see MOE in person. MOE is the -MOTHER OF ALL EAGLES-. I am of course talking about Morganluver's icon. The coin is breathtaking to say the least. The reaction from other forum members was similar, although less drool may have been involved.
I purchased the following:

1. 1924 Peace $ NGC-MS64 white
2.1881-S $ PCGS-MS64 Superb mottled brown and green obverse. Obverse is 99% PL.
3. 1885-O $ PCGS-MS64 Superb Christmas green obverse with electric reds in the peripheri. (Purchased from Morganluver).
4.1935 Texas 50c PCGS-MS65 White blazer with a superior strike.

I only bought 4 coins, and no Mercs, but the Texas thrilled me alot as well as the 1885-O.
I had alot of fun and am looking forward to next time.
Thanks guys for a great day.

    Brian,

Where's the photo of the four con men, I mean coin men?

The small shows are what you make of them.

Picked up the neat CC from Morganluver and a really nice 1888-O Morgan in PCGS MS65, along with some neat cameo's and a few Ikes with some potential.

OVerall well worth the three hours we spent there!

I had a great time meeting you and spending time with great forum members.
Small shows are fun in that regard. There is a real sense of community there and plenty to look at as well if you take the time. I enjoyed looking at your coins alot.
  • Brian,

Again, thanks for the invite. It was lots of fun and great seeing you and segoja again and meeting Rich. Your synopsis of the show is right on the mark IMO, and even though there wasn't much of my kind of material(toned), it was very enjoyable and, thanks to you guys, I can pay a bill or two. image

The pic of our "motley" crew looks great, and either we're smaller than I thought or segoja should be "Sequoia"!

I love Mother of all Eagles (MOE)! great acronym! It's a real neat coin and I sure hope I can hold on to it for a while. I've definately been blessed to have owned some real beauties, but unfortunately, that's usually in the past tense. image

Hopefully, we can get to another show soon, Collectorama in Lakeland 9-10-03?
  • Dead on description of the show. It was a pleasure to see Brian again and to meet the others. I was surprised
at the number of stamp dealers there, my wife would have been in heaven if she could have made it.

    She collects stamps.

I did have a shopping list she sent and was able to get her state quarters. She is putting together sets for
a neice and nephew and several grandchildren. As for me, ever have one of those days where nothing calls
to you. I looked and looked with my money burning a hole in my pocket but couldn't find a thing that said
buy me. I almost got a few mercuries but on close examination the BU coins were AU, now I like AU coins but
not for uncirc money. I have been studying grading and reading here a lot and I find it is making me a lot more
finicky about what I buy, don't know if that is good or bad but I'm leaning toward good. image When I got home
the wife was amazed to discover I had spent a grand total of $20 at the show and that only on her quarters.

I got to look at Morganluvers icon coin, that is a truly beautiful coin, the colors just run like liquid over the
    surface.image
I look forward to getting together at the next show.

    Scott:
It was great to see you again. Although you did not buy anything for yourself, the social aspect of the show was great for all of us. That is what the hobby is all about in the end. Next time we hope you make it early enough to join us for breakfast.
  • Hi guys! Well, I'm really bummed that I had to miss today, but I helped out a buddy of mine so I never regret good karma. Brian, maybe I'll catch you in Sarasota or at the FUN show this year. James, thanks for the info and I'll definitely bring along my proof sets next month.

Thanks for the report Brian. Sounds like it was a bit too small to find what I'm after. I'll be at the Orlando show the first weekend in October.
