What do you guys think of this Seated Quarter?

It's in my Dansco Type album. It's definitely been dipped, but the reverse has retained some interesting colors. The coin is actually much shinier than the scan, and the toning has some nice irridescent golds and greens.

Anyway, it didn't cost an arm and a leg: $100. Did I do OK?

  • What's going on under the rock base above the 8 in the date? Is that a die crack?

It is in fact a raised hairline. Could very well be a die crack, but I'm not an expert on errors.

Ray, I was thinking die crack as well. For a $100 the reverse looks good, would have to see the obv. in person.

While $100 may be "fair" value for the coin I wonder what resale would be on this? The surfaces are no longer close to original as the coin has been anwhere from lightly to heavily cleaned. While today's Au50 typically has only around 5%-15% luster remaining (some have ZERO) it is possible to find nice AU's with nearly orig surfaces and say 30% or more luster for not much more than AU50 price.....maybe $125-150. And that coin to me would be much more desireable and more easily sold/traded should you want to move out of it.

For coins as common as AU seated quarters, I downgrade at least half a grade for light cleanings and a full grade or more for heavy ones. Luster and then orig of surfaces drives the quality of an AU, mot so much just technical wear. I see too many stripped AU coins that are really only worth XF money. Go for the LUSTER.

  • Thanks roadrunner. That sounds like very astute advice.

I agree with roadrunner except that I tend to downgrade cleaned/dipped coins more severely. The Seated series is awash with cleaned coins. Original pieces are getting hard to find.
    All glory is fleeting.

291fifth, I agree. There is no limit to how many grades you can subtract due to harsh cleanings. Just like in the unc categories, buy the most eye-appealing and orig, mark free, circs and AU's you can find....and with plenty of cartwheel still left. 95% or more of the remaining circs are not worthy of serious collectors. Be fussy. you want to flip them and make a quick buck, fine. But keep the "gem'
    au's for yourself.

  • This coin hasn't been harshly cleaned. Just dipped. I know the dealer who did it, and he occasionally dips a coin if it's a real cow chip. In fact, I had him dip a Barber Dime for me. Trust me, it's better off. Although it was uncirculated, it had the blackest grimiest toning you can imagine. It was like looking at a turd. I suspect this quarter has been improved, if you will, by its treatment.

Sorry but a $100 sounds pretty steep to me. It looks XF before the cleaning and red book which is full retail lists for $45 in XF so if you subtracted a few $'s for the cleaning it does not look like such a good deal. Try selling coins like this and you will see they are hard to sell for a good price. mike

Darktone's words are wise. It's hard enough to grow a skin thick enough to be able to sell "nice" coins at decent prices to a given dealer, without having to try it with pieces like these. Try and shop it around and it may well be an eye-opening experience, albeit one you're not likely to forget or want to remember - much like what I (and likely everyone) has been through in the dark, distant past.
  • Well, fair enough. I knew very well what I was buying, and I don't sell my coins so resell values have no meaning. I just wanted to fill a hole in the Dansco album and I liked the toning on the reverse. It's actually quite lovely - the scan sucks.

John , yes I agree the reverse looks to have some neat toning. image
originalisbest, thanksimage but I think your words are very wise also " Try and shop it around and it may well be an eye-opening experience" this is the truth! I think for anyone that has not sold coins before whether you intend to sell or not- it is something that everyone should try as it will definitely change your buying habits and how you look at coin purchases. mike
