Found a nice 66 Doubled Die JFK today. (pics)

Pretty dramatic doubling on the devices. This one is DMR-3. Although the doubling is not as dramatic on the lettering as the DMR-21 I put up a few weeks ago, it is clearly visible with the unaided eye. The coin itself is a light contrast SMS half, with some field frost and lots of die polish. The coin is stage A (the die scratch is visible above the eagle's left leg on the reverse). Hope you enjoy the pics. I'm making progress. image

Short die gouge from the top of the L. Notice the doubling on the L.

If this coin was sent to PCGS, would you have to put the coneca numbers on the submission form? Would ANACS be a better way to go with this coin-would the error be described more accurately on the holder? I have a 64 proof doubled die quarter and I am wondering when I send it in if it is necessary to put the exact attribution numbers on the invoice. Thanksimage----------BigE

    BigE,

My GUESS is that PCGS error service would give it the DD designation without F/S or Coneca #'s. I went and looked, and there are two doubles in 64 PF and one triple. This will help if you don't have the link. Good luck, and put up a pic if you get a chance. The only Washington oddities I have are a 68 DD and a 68 RPM. If I were wanting the attribution #'s, I'd use ANACS. My 64 triple-die JFK and my 82 No FG are in ANACS.

Thanks again DHeath, I dont have anywhere near the photo skills you have, as a matter of fact I dont have any at allimage What if you put the wrong attribution numbers on the ANACS form-do you have any knowledge if they will put the correct number. Maybe it is just best to pay extra and have ANACS do it for youimage--------------BigE

  • Unless PCGS has changed there minds, they do not designate this ddo. I have asked about 4 times over the last 3 years.

I have always sent mine to ANACS, but now I hear NGC is doing this one, so I may switch to NGC for errors, since I am already considering switching all coins to NGC as well.

I have about 15 or so 66ddo halves, two that are near lock cameos, one looks like a solid 67 too. I have been putting these aside for 4 years, it is such a great ddo, very visible with the naked eye.

    Morris,

They'll holder them. Here is a link to one recently sold in a PCGS holder.

Great pix and neat coins. I don't know whether I told you this or not but the triple die was picked up off teletrade. Once in awhile anacs coins will show up there.

This one is my favorite. According to Dr.Wiles markers, it is a DMR-21. It is listed in his reference as URS-1. It got the cam designation.

You must be seriously into collecting these. How many varities are out there?

The coin Mike mentioned was a nice 64 triple in an ANACS holder that he added to my collection. I'll try to image it today. Thanks Mike.image

Edited to add - Mike there are 33 different listings for 1966 alone. There is also a 65 rotated reverse I'd love to find.

Don in that same Teletrade auction I picked up an IKE 74 s/s PF67 heavy cameo in an Anacs holder. Wiles DMR-12. More weenie coins for me.image

Edited to add: you don't see any IKE collectors on here collecting these. I guess I have it all to myself.image

That RR '65 must be extremely rare. I've been looking for so many years that I'm about ready to give up.

CK, it is a SMS coin. It is rotated reverse 110° CW. It is listed as URS-1, so there is one documented example. I'd love to make it URS-2, but I've been looking a long time too. Good luck to us!

Mike - here's to the road less traveled. LOL

On the plus side, its rarity makes it less likely I passed on one before I knew of its existence.
