Wow! Page 76 of the September 29, 2003 Coin World. A little late with the press release aren't they? PCGS kicked them to the curb on this one!

Well since Bowers & Merena is owned by the same company that PCGS is, and they offered the reward, it only makes sense they saw it first. NGC did not see it until the coin was loaned to the ANA for display. Kind of hard to confirm the authenticity of a coin that you have not been allowed to look at.

  • I don't get it

PCGS saw the coin and said it is authentic

and then they want another opinion from NGC - okay it is authentic

    why not ANACS as well

they are building a strong provenance but why? are they going to sell it? I heard 40 years ago that someone said the one they have was a fake - do they have a couple, a real one and a good fake?

wouldn't it be cool if they sold 5-10 fakes in private deals and one of the conditions of sale was anonomity for 10 years (well, I am sure they would not do such a thing - but maybe I would if I could )

    Some people have trust issues.
  • I guess since they were told it was fake 40 years ago they might want a second opinion image

    sinin,

Stacks called it a fake and didn't auction it... then again, it was just compared to the 4 other genuine ones... when it's so valuable, it's probably easier to use other known examples, then to be liable for such an extreme amount of money by auctioning it as genuine.

Jeremy makes a good point. At any rate, if I could afford the coin, I would buy a house on St. Martin with a nice schooner to match.

    We ARE watching you.
