I am assuming that the seller may be trying to add the cost of the auction (listing and end of auction fees, etc.) in the shipping and handling price. Are these from the same seller?

No from differant sellers. I guess listing and end of auction fees, etc would come under handling. does it cost more to list a bust or barb than it does to list a state quarter?

What's the value of the coins? Maybe it's an increase in insurance costs.

The listing cost depends on the starting price. The max charge is $3.30, I think. The min is $0.30 for a listing at $9.99 or less. Then it goes to $0.55, etc.

The seller may also be charging other things in the shipping and handling fees like gas to go to the USPS, etc.

I negged a seller once who did not list the S/H fees in the auction. The auction ended at $2.25 and then he charged me $5.75 for shipping. The package came with an $0.86 postage on it. I was oputraged.

I first emailed the seller and he started all this stuff about: gas to go to the USPS, the cost of ink to make out the mailing label, the cost of the envelope, the cost of tape, the cost of the label, the cost of his time (which he said was not cheap), and so much more.

After that email, I negged him and gladly took the neg he gave me in return.

By the way, before every bid, I check to see if the shipping info is listed. If it is not, then I email. If I get no reply, I skip the auction and find something else to bid on.
  • sellers set their own shipping/handling fees

some are rather expensive and some are rather cheap

I wouldn't want to buy a coin with shipping at a buck or lower

if it gets more than $5, than insurance better be included and a item worth over a couple hundred

I don't mind helping with the listing and end of auction fees, etc but the ink, tape, time would PO me some. gas and time thats crazy like the sell needs to do that. I bet he charged 10 people time and gas on one trip to the post office. I think some of these guy rip us collectors. not all. I like buying from guys like Supercoin he has low s/h and he had sent the coin even before he got the money for it. I had the coins 3 days after the aution closed.

Which is why $2-3 shipping is more than adequate...

It costs me $6.05 to ship a holdered coin in a padded envelope with under $100.00 insurance via "PRIORITY" mail. I don't count the envelope, gas, or my time...those things are just the cost of doing business.

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • I just had a seller ship me 4 slabbed coins packaged in a padded mailer with insurance and delivery confirmation for under $4.00. He charged me $3.50 s/h/i. A seller I have dealt with in the past and will continue to deal with in the future. image

    My eBay
  • I bought a proof Jeff once and paid $1 shipping. The raw coin was folded in some paper and taped to a regular envelope. Believe me this is not the way to treat a gem coin.

Bubble wrap, bubble envelopes and insurance all cost money.
  • I shipped out 4 packages yesterday. I always ship Priority Mail (box) with Delivery Confirmation.
#1. I charged the buyer $3.85, (Priority Mail + Delivery Confirmation) the actual shipping charge was $4.30,
#2. I charged the buyer $3.85, (Priority Mail + Delivery Confirmation) the actual shipping charge was $5.85,
#3. I charged the buyer $5.15, (Priority Mail + Delivery Confirmation + Insurance), the actual charge was $6.50,
#4. I charged the buyer $5.15, (Priority Mail + Delivery Confirmation + Insurance), the actual charge was $6.50.

On all of my Ebay Auctions I charge $3.85 for Priority Mail (Box) with Delivery Confirmation. The cheapest cost for this service is actually $4.30, I eat the Extra cost.

If the buyer wants Insurance I charge $1.30 extra (optional if the buyer requests it), but I usually insure the package for the minimum $51.00 value which costs $2.20, again, I eat the 90-cent extra cost.

If the Item is a single coin it goes into a bubble envelope and then the bubble envelope goes into the Priority Mail box for shipping. I do not add-on any charges for any supplies and/or any other incidentals to getting the Item(s) to the buyer. I have never had any problems with this system.

It seems to me a lot of money is wasted on Priority Mail. If you're shipping something that weighs a few pounds, fine. But for a coin or two, why spend $3.85 when you can spend 49 cents postage using a 10 cent bubble mailer to send first class, which doesn't take any longer in delivery time (plus insurance, if desired)?
Seems to me lots of sellers use Prio Mail because they want to use the free boxes supplied by USPS. It's not free, it's eaten up by wasting about $3.00 in unncecessary postage. Perhaps they don't realize that many of us factor shipping costs into the bid, and they are ultimately paying for the postage themselves.

This is one of my pet-peeves. I refuse to bid on an auction where there is a high s/h charge. If it isn't listed, I just skip the auction. I figure if the seller won't or doesn't want to put their s/h price in, I don't want to take the time to email them, wait for a reply, etc.

I have actually emailed a few sellers that did state their shipping, as asked if they would be willing to work with me on that. For example, to ship one raw coin, worth only $20, someone had $7.50 for s/h. I told him I was intersted, but asked him what it would really cost to ship. He lowered the s/h to $4 for me, so I bought it. It came in a bubble padded envolope with postage of $0.90 still.

most of the time not all but most the coin is sent in an #10 envelope with a 37c stamp sometimes a padded enelope with still under $1.00 postage for 4 to 6 dollars in shipping. I was just wondering what I was paying for.

I won't bid on an auction that does not list s/h charges without confirmation from the seller
beforehand. It does irritate me to see someone charge $10 to ship one slab, but if it's
worth $100 and I can win it for $20, I'll still pay the $10 shipping...
