While I won't touch his stuff with a 10-foot pole, there is still the chance that he gets an occasional real one slabbed (obviously, non-PCI would have looked better) to make his other coins seem real...

The photos are poor so what difference does it matter? I would assume the coin is problematic and bid accordingly.

    Bryan,

That's precisely the problem...it is about 98% real looking. I can barely tell the difference between NT and AT on this one...

That looks like bag toning. I'm not sure I've ever seen a 1904-O with bag toning. It also, at least to my inexperienced eye, looks like it has far too much green and not enough gold.

  • If that's his work, then based on that pic, he has indeed come of age.

    Russ,

Also, the green appears to mix in unnaturally with a teal, but very discretely. Also, the red on the rims seems to float a bit in its transition to the tealish-green area...all in all, AT but way too close to getting it right.

It's tempting to buy this one, crack it out and see what PCGS or NGC think about it. PCI is no judge since they had no problem holdering his earlier work that a child could see was bogus.

  • Are you guys trying to say that this may not be a natural tone? How can you tell a natural from an artificial?
  • Speaking from experience, I've seen HUNDREDS of 0-mint coins with that color pattern over the last 20 years. I can't say I specifically remember 04-O's with that look, but 83-O's, 84-O's, and 85-O's and possibly even 87-P's I've seen with virtually identical colors and patterns.

    Bryan,

Even in my very short time at this, I've seen plenty of 83-O through 85-O with similar toning. They actually seem to be quite common. I just hadn't seen the 1904-O like this. But, he has two other 1904-O's listed right now, both PCGS graded. Neither as vivid as the PCI coin, though.

  • That one is one of the models he bought - I am fairly positive he did not make that one

What I don't understand is: how come only until recently, he had a 100% positive feedback rating? Are there many people are that are oblivious to what a real toned coin looks like? Ray

Here's an 84-O that I owned very briefly until Jason snatched it away from me:

Comparing the colors on the coin in the auction to this one, the auction coin just doesn't seem right to me. But, again, my eye is very inexperienced.

  • Bag-toned 04-O's wouldn't be common, that's for sure. And when encountered, they'd probably not look this good on average.

I've looked at the pics several times and the greens and reddish colors don't scare me......but that's not with the coin in hand. I may form a completely different opinion with the coin in-hand and under the right lighting.

I'm just shooting straight with you guys.

One thing it appears this guy has done over the last few months is to purchase pieces that look a lot like what he's trying to duplicate. Why? One reason is to have some examples in hand for reference purposes and the other is to perhaps lull the unexpecting newbie that is looking over his auctions into confusing the real thing with his work.

  • For what it's worth, I bought a very nice textile toned 83 O in an NGC at 62. Great colors and bag effects, I know he didn't make that one.

I bought it because the price was way too low for a coin like that. His reputation has scared alot of people off.

Just a thought here, but perhaps people who aren't collectors sell him toned coins they may have gotten through various means.

I have bought 4 or 5 of his coins, a couple I knew good and well were AT, others I got great deals on. I will say one thing, he ships super fast and packages things better than most sellers.

Based on the pictures, I'd go with that one being the real deal. Might feel different if I had it in hand, but his pictures have been right on as far as coloration.

This seller has received one negative and five neutral feedbacks the past two weeks that all state the coins are ATed. Having watched his auctions for awhile, I believe that every so often he sells a NTed coin to throw people off. Being this coin is a gold PCI MS62 is enough warning for me to pass.

Are not most if not all of his coins toned on both sides??? Isn't that from the heat (cooking). This coin is white on the other side. Tough to due cooking only one side. Just my thoughts after looking at this photo

The picture's toning looks OK to me. But the real coin's toning is anyone's guess until it's in-hand.

Sure am glad most of you guys are so good as to be able to determine AT from NT from such a crummy picture. Perhaps your decision is clouded by this guys track record? Or maybe the plastic it's in is where the bias lies. What about the similiarly toned Morgan he has for sale in a PCGS holder? Oh wait...it's in a PCGS holder...WHAT was I THINKING?!?!

    I agree with Neil.

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • I too think this is not one he "did". I dont recall any other one-sided toners from him-always both sides.

Back when his food was 100% positive- I gave him his 1st neg-food along with a "fake tone" comment. He then immediately changed his ebay identity .
