***Long Beach update***

I have been at LB since Wednesday morning. The floor opened up at 2 on Wed. and I quickly setup and started to look around for toned coins and higher grade Morgans. Did not buy any toned morgans but did scope out a few morgans. Sales on Wed. were a little slow considering I usually do not do alot of business with dealers. A couple of dealers said the dealer activity seemed a LITTLE slow but was fairly good overall.

Thursday morning I decided to look for some possible upgrades for same day grading at the show. I have been fairly good at finding undergraded Morgans and submitting them for same day grading and getting upgrades. This was NO exception! Here is what I got:

Bought a 1880 S $ in NGC ms67 holder for $150 over ask because it was PQ. Submitted at PCGS and got a ms68 image
Bought a 1878 S $ in NGC ms66 from a dealers case for Bid. Upgraded at NGC to ms67 (big score!) image
Bought a 1879 S $ off of Ebay (waited for LB to submit) in a ms65PL holder and came back a ms67PL!!! NGC image
I did put in 3 other Ebay purchases that got the same grades as before so I went 3 for 6

Business on Thursday picked up a little bit as there was a good group of collectors that were at the show until 4:00 or so. Double nuclear market? I would call it single nuclear image

If any forum members are at the show and have not stopped by my table please do #651.

I did buy the wildest toned Mercury dime I have EVER seen from the Heritage auction. the photos are very poor from Heritage so I will post new ones when I get back home.

  • Great Dime. I was there yesterday but didn't notice you. Do you know what happens after something goes nuclear? Fallout. That's what happens next and that's what I was noticing at Long Beach. image Well maybe not for you, you sell some spectacular material.

Jason, Nice BUMP, BUMP, BUMP on those three upgrades~! Bargains are to be had for the decerning eye off of eBay.
It was cool seeing you yesterday.

The one negative of being a Dealer though is you're just not free to spent some casual time and talk coins. Sorry you (and LegendSteve) couldn't make lunch next door.
You would have heard some killer stories (one regarding an NGC MS69* silver dime that rocks) and seen some fabulous coins (during "show n tell").

glad to see that coin went to a good guy! I left a paper bid before I left then tried to bid on it via ebay but my dang phone connection just isn't quick enough, i hit 850 but it just didn't get there. That was easily the most beautiful coin I saw in the auction. Nice buy.

Ps. nice to meet you yesterday. pm me if you want to turn that guy around verrry quickly!

  • placid, no they are not but they are properly graded in the holders they are in now.

zenny, I am sure glad you did not have a good connection image . I will pick her up today so stop by later and take a look.

I was only down there for the day, heading up to monterey for the jazz festival this weekend. That really was an astonishing coin, though. I almost stayed for the auction but she was so dang late into it I never would have gotten home last night. oh well.

    JB,

Any Merc details or updates to report?

    Congrats on the 2pointer image

  • there seemed to be high grade mercs around the floor at the show. not a bunch of earlier dates but most anything in high grade after 1930. I bought a stunning 1940 s in ms68 (pop 3) for my set. I also got a auction lot that had 3 67 no bands common dates with nice deep album toning. I was able to see some high end dimes to a few dealers around the show.

Can't wait to see my n ew WILD toned 1945 d in a pcgs holder for my set.

    more later

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
  • thanks guys, I will post a picture on monday. image
  • Jason,

That was a super cool Merc dime -- it looked even better today when you were at my table than when I looked at it during lot viewing on Tuesday. I figured I would be the buyer because I was willing to pay 18.5 times bid -- NOT!!! You stepped up to the plate and I'm glad you got it...it's a truly exceptional piece. See you tomorrow.

You won the three Mercs with the rim tone. Cool looking coins. A couple of bids were put in on them also. I have three of the sister coins that were all submitted from the same collection I believe. Heritage put them on thier site a few weeks ago. I was suprised the three you won ended up in the auction.

2 of the three of those rim toned ones are pretty nice. the third one just barely has a little color. When I was bidding I figured you had bid or were bidding against me during the auction image

Seems like the same people do the bidding on those nicely toned Mercs......imageimage The three you got do have a richer tone than the ones that are here in Oregon. Just love that rim tone on these.

Sure wish I could be down there but I will see and get to meet you in Portland next spring. Have a great weekend at the show.

    Ken
