Our first Club Show report.

We had our first show today in what might be termed the Modern Era for the local coin clubs. In a rather neat moment of nostalgia, a collector came up to me with a token which had inscribed on it "Painesville Coin Club---7th Annual Show" and it was dated sometime in 1968. I know they were held in the same location as this show until the mid-late 80's. Hopefully, we can start that tradition back up. Our crowd today was a bit less than anticipated but seemed enthusiastic and the dealers generally said it was a good show for them, though we did have several leave early.
The day started off hectic, trying to get the final preperations made and having to re-route traffic off the freeway to the show due to some recent road construction. Dealers started showing up a little before 8AM and the boy scouts, who handled the food, were there setting up a tent by then. We tried to get them involved however we could, drawing raffle tickets and stuff like that. They've been doing some fund drives and stuff for a 2005 trip to Hawaii. I wonder if they need any Scoutmasters?? We had a good mixture of local dealers and out-of-towners, raw and slabbed coins and even a few guys with quite a bit of Darkside stuff. I tried to walk around as time allowed and early on I found four 1956 Proof Sets with Type 1 half-dollars, no cam's but still sweet. I hooked up with a local guy and put about half down on a really pretty Lincoln Matte Proof, 1912 in PCGS PR64RB. This coin has the nicest purple fields on the obverse and blue-purple ringing the reverse bottom from wheat ear to wheat ear.
Forum members clevegreg and quarterjack showed up and shared a table. We seem to get together at most of the Cleveland shows and it's gotten to be a routine to meet with them. Nice guys, we always manage to have a few laughs. Greg has the last one from this show since he won the 1/2 ounce gold in our raffle!!! Dave Sands brought his son along to help out, always nice to see a budding young collector. I hope he was paid well.
I also met toothpuller for the first time. Evidentally we live about 35 miles apart and he also had one of his children with him, Elizabeth. Raise 'em right!! Members mdwoods and HartlandMan showed up around noon. This was the first time I met HartlandMan, also. Nice to see Mark again, he brought along a nice copper pattern 5 cent, i think it was a J-190 with the 3CN obverse design, and I had a chance to see a slab caddy up close and personal!! We chuckled about that, but the buggers seem to work well. I directed his attention to a nice 1859 half-dollar pattern I had spotted earlier, I think it was a J-240 in an old green holder. We walked around some and both managed to pick up some coins here and there. My second beautiful toned Lincoln proof of the day was an ANACS 1952 PR65 with a really intense blue band across almost half of the obverse opposite Lincoln's face and partially on the reverse. Strange, two from one show and I'm not a cent collector.
My friend from the club that I mentioned in this thread picked up his coins from the dealer who submitted them to PCGS. He had about 6 total which included the dimes in the thread. The 1888 was in fact a proof and graded PR64 but they body-bagged his 1886-S for questionable color. Hopefully i can help him out there with a re-submission because the coin isn't AT. He had a very nice mid-1880's 3CN which returned PR66!! My friend evidentally has a sharp eye because he'd purchased these all some time ago raw. Way to go Kyle.
Things started to wind down around 2 o'clock after the raffle drawing was held. By this time i was wupped!! Been up since 4:30 AM so we sat around for a bit with the last few dealers, talked about the next show and started to clean up. We even managed to get the Sheriff who stood security to help move tables!! I'd encourage local clubs to attempt something like this. We did it on a modest budget and tried to make it easy for dealers to attend with a $25 table fee. With better advertising and having the first show as a point of reference for collectors and dealers, we should be able to improve with the next one. Gotta ride the wave the hobby seems to be on. These are good times!!

Had a great time and also sold a few coins, pretty good crowd considering other events taking place in the area today.
As always good to see and meet Forum members along with the club guys and gals.
Tell Ritch , thanks for the refreshments!
Rest assured my son (Joey) was well compensated for his help even though he still recieved his weekly allowance upon returning home. Hey, he's making more money than me!!
Those were some sweet cents you picked up today.
Again, WELCOME HOME GREG!
Dave
ROTFLMAO!!!
hey Dave
i think i could spend a healthy dollar at your table some day, you have some sweet coins. i had commited to Greg for a Jefferson that we've been trying to finalize since February. i almost wet my pants today when he said he couldn't find it!!
how did you come by that Walker and did you ever consider packing it away??
al h.
Yes i had thought about stashing it away, but when you are set up at a show it's ALL for sale otherwise i'd be on the other side of the table, no offense meant.
Interested in selling that Matte Lincoln?
Dave
Interested in selling that Matte Lincoln? when i upgrade, baby, when i upgrade!! i'm putting together a denomination type set and that has now become my one cent representation. i was originally going to buy an 1861 CN from Rick Snow in Baltimore but the coin was sold before i made it to his table. i still need a half-cent, three-cent, twenty-cent and quarter to be complete through the dollar. then i'll get to move slowly with the gold!!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Greg
Can't believe the table fee is so cheap. Where did you hold the show, under a tent on a church lawn?
Got quoins?
what we did was approach the County Fairgrounds about holding it in the same location where it had last been held about 15 years earlier. it was actually an alternative for our first choice which was an old union hall, but we couldn't find the current owner to discuss renting it. there were plusses and minusses with the Armory Building. the biggest minus was that we found out after we'd started taking dealer fees that we'd need liability insurance and then two weeks prior to the show when we signed the contract the price increased by $25 and we were informed of a $100 security deposit. on the plus side, the location was better and all the tables/chairs were provided and already set up, we just needed to move them around.
my caution to others is simple----think of all the questions you can and ask them, even the ones that sound stupid. our committee is a bit wiser than it was 6 months ago!!!
back to the table fees, we figured they would pay for the hall and security. at $25/table or 2 for $45 it was hard for a dealer to NOT make money.

catchy about lustrous brown copper with electric blue toning. It's my favorit kind of copper. I picked up a very pretty 38 D Buffalo from Quarterjack. It has booming luster and a great strike.
I also picked up some raw Canadian stuff for my books. I hope the show becomes an annual event.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
Al,
It was nice to meet you at the show, though I kind of feel that I knew you already from all you prolific writing on the forum. Am very impressed that you remembered Elizabeth's name and she was happy to attend her first coin show.
Quarterjack [Dave],
My daughter wants to thank you again for the silver half.
