What would happen to coin market WITHOUT ebay? Or if they substantially raised their fees?

Without eBay, those of us who do not live near coin shops, or even live in a city that does not have even minor coin shows would be sitting back saving our money.

I am thankful eBay is there even if there are lots of scammers selling on it. eBay is like the 24-hour coin store. I rarely get to go to the FUN show and other than a local coin shop that sells over priced junk (with an occassional good buy maybe 1 or 2 times a year), I have nothing near by.

Without this coin forum and eBay, I would not have learned half of what I know.

Loose a lot of international collectors of US coins ( I know a lot of you may cheer at the thought! )but if we had to rely on local sources or our visits across the pond our collections would grow at a very slow rate. I would also find it very difficult to move on coins.

I would be extremely more cautious in my coin buying as I would not have a market place to readily unload my bad purchases or coins that start to displease me due to their ugliness.

Thank God, Buddha and the three nephites (mormon joke) for Ebay.

I believe that overall eBay is a good thing for the collector/seller. For those of us who don't have the luxury of attending the big shows or having a well stocked local dealer; eBay and the other internet venues provide a good alternative. If I want to buy a certain coin in a certain grade there is usually decent selection from which to choose on eBay that most dealers couldn't match.
If I have something to sell I basically have the world as my market place. Where else can you advertise your item to the world for a mere 45 cents. While eBay is far from perfect it has generally been a lot more good than bad at least for me.

I'm sure ARCO meant to say that he would not have as wide a market for the collectors' gems which he had by some act of God happened to upgrade at great cost and was now reluctantly parting with.

Wallstrret man, I curious how tyler will respond to that one?

Anyway, I would hate it, becuase then I would have to go back to selling to dealers at bid levels or less and losing out everytime I find an upgrade for my collection. Especially when they come quickly.

Few years ago in three months time, I upgraded from a F-15 to X-40 to Ms-63B to a Ms-64Rd 1914-d Lincoln. Never lost a dime each time do to e-bay, had I had to trade in or sell to dealer, I would have loss quite a bit??

I think this recent price excellaration due to this "hot market" has had a lot of help from on line sales (E-bay, signature auctions, etc). I feel had it not been for this, prices would not have advanced as rapidly this go around. It gives everyone a easy way to buy and sell, and an avenue to disperse subpar stuff as Tyler mentioned. And get real strong money dfor the PQ coins as well, eliminating the middle man moneymaker.

I hate to say it, but alot of them [including coin doc's] would go to the pcgs or ngc b.s.t. boards and attempt to peddle there wares.

Well I don't sell much on eBay. Selling to a dealer is my last resort. Selling on eBay is my second to last resort. I would list here or the NGC boreds or other free venue first. Go to eBay and pay umpteen dollars in fees to CYA against a loss and hope yur item sells. Well if eBay raises their fees I sure as hell won't use them as a way to sell.
