VISITED THE LOCAL COIN SHOP TODAY...

fully intending on buying a gold coin. After louping the slabbed coins he had, I passed on all. Gold coins are just going a tad high right now for me spend hard earned money and wind up with a case of "Buyer's Remorse."

So...I wound up with a raw 1917 Type 1 SLQ in what I guess is AU-53, a 1970-S small date proof Lincoln PR-65, maybe 66 and an assorted lot of UNC 40% Kennedys for an old plastic pane Whitman album I'm filling.

I got off cheaply, and no "Buyer's Remorse."

  • I did Lucy, but really had my heart set on a $2 1/2 or $5 Indian. The best deal was a 1911-S $5 in a green AU-50 PCGS holder. Looked XF-40 to me. No detail on the headband whatsoever and absolutely no luster.

I have this coin shop near me that seems to have alot of totally overgraded slabbed coins. NGC Washingtons
slabbed 66 that you can see scratches and milkspots etc...What IS the deal with these coins. He must have
bought them at a grade or two lower and thinks he,ll sell them as stated? What crap.

  • SmallTownCoins,

You are right about coin shops being fun. Especially relatively quiet small town shops. For the past 3 years or so I have done tens of thousands of dollars worth of business with the owner of this particular shop. He gives me some really sweet deals at times.

The nicest thing is, he lets me take any coin, no matter the value outside to check it out in the sunlight. We all know how bad the lighting is in those small shops.

I hear you on the gold. I have been looking for a nice type gold piece in each denomination, but even looking at slabbed coins below MS64 they all seemed to have gone through some industrial strength scrubbing machine. XF and AU coins just look horrible. I wonder if a single original XF or AU gold coin exists? I would sure love to see one.

About $7500 of that was in gold bullion when gold was between $257 and $275 an ounce. Of course I couldn't hang on to it long enough to make a profit, and wound up selling it back to him a bit at a time. So...he didn't make much on those transactions, and neither did I.

I averaged between $300 and $500 a week spent when I was doing Swapmeets and local coin shows. I moved an awful lot of coins for him.

Sounds like my kind of day. Instead, I'm stuck at work. I'll have to do my shopping Tuesday. It should be an all day adventure.
