I just believe the intention of this thread is wrong tj. Value quite often has nothing to do with the rarity or enjoyment of coins. I have many half cent varieties that are worth many many times less than some of the coins posted here that have a mintage of much more and I get far more enjoyment out of looking at those than paying $50,000 for some hyped up rarity. Just my opinion, certainly not knocking those that purchase 'em. image Some of my most "expensive" are:

    1955 1c DDO ANACS MS61 BN
    1936 10c PCGS PR64
    1942/1 10c ANACS EF45
    1877 1c ANACS F15

I'll think of some more later...

<< <i>Skip this thread if you don't own any coins over 1000 dollars or if your only answer is none of your buisness. >>

This statement coupled with the "Collectors only" in the title is not the kind of elitist garbage I have come to expect from these boards.

If you don't own a coin valued at $1000 or more, you're NOT a collector? What a bunch of coin-snobbish tripe!

I feel the intent of this thread is to see what BETTER cool coins folks actually own. Of course any coin can be cool to anyone, but generally collectors are more impressed with the better coins (read: more expensive). If money were of no object, some people would collect different coins. I for one would collect MS-65+ Seated Half Dollars. Well, money is a blockade for me to get a complete gem set of Seated Half Dollars, so I only have the major types. I like to read of folks who have the better grades of all Seated coins. I'm slightly curious as to real collectors who have more expensive coins. I see the Heritage auction, and am comming to realize that I might not win a single lot. Just who is winning them? The coins have to eventually go to some collector somewhere, but who? This at least let's me know that the collectors here are getting some of those "nicer" coins.

I own coins that are worth substantial amounts, but it's really rarity and "pricelessness"
that most collectors find more appealing. I also own some coins that list at a few dollars
that I wouldn't trade for a thousand dollars.

edit to add-- ...and the "valuable" coins weren't "expensive" they've merely appreciated.

Tjkillian & Joe Jewler "got it" that is my meaning for this thread.

People who have qouted me here have either left off some words like {Just Curious] as to why I wanted to see what other collectors hd in terms of more expensive coins [even more expensive then mine] God, didn't anyone get the joke yesterday when I called Joe Jewler a stuck up snob because all his top 3 were way more valuable then mine ?

So, some off you don't think I should ask about others valuable coins or if I do against your advice I'm a stuck up snob ???? LOL

The majority of people here took my thread the way it was intended, so I guess I'll be satiwsfied with that.

Now it's time for a song; [sung to the tune of people will say we're in love from the musical Oklahoma] ; Don't ask what your coins are worth, don't say what you paid for them, people will say your a snob. Don't hyjack a thread that you don't like, Don't read your interpetations into my motives or I just might say your a snob. {I know} I can't sing !!!

Whoever said that I said or implied that collectors who have coins worth less then 1 k aren't worth anything is putting there interpetation to my thread about being curious about seeing coins worth more then 1k. I never said that I thought you or your coins wern't worth anything because I wanted to see a thread with more valuable coins. If you think otherwise start a thread of your own instead of putting your words in my mouth. I'm not going to respond to this anymore because most people here got my meaning. I wishh people could agree here to disagree without resorting to putdowns. And I make no apoligies for being curious to hear about other collectors most valuable coins worth more then 1 k.
And enjoyed reading most of the replys that did not try to hyjack my thread because they understood my intent.

    Peace, Les

Thanks, barberlover, I've liked this thread! As a collector, I'm always interested in what other people collect, especially those coins they pick out as highlights of their sets. It's great to see the photos too!

Here are a few of mine (background chosen in honor of cherrypickincoin):

I didn't put any words in your mouth. You did that yourself.

"Collectors only" it's in the title. Then you go on to tell people if they don't have coins worth more than $1000 to skip the thread. Everyone here is a collector that I know of, whether their coins are valued above or below $1000.

If you had phrased the title for collectors to list their $1000+ coins it would have been different. "Collectors only" is an elitist phrase the way it was used.

Hijacking your thread? Don't make me laugh. Because I decide to make a statement you don't agree with? Get used to it. This is a public forum.

    Great thread.

Thank you to all the mature, well-intentioned contributors for sharing their coins with us. I've enjoyed hearing about the modestly expensive (valuable coins) that other collectors own.

To the other contributors......as always....if you don't like a thread....just skip it and don't waste our time.

Remember....it's about the joy of collecting. It's not the elitism that get's me turned-off of many threads....it's the thread police that always want to tell other people what to say, how to write, what to think. If someone hasn't attacked you directly....and you don't like their thread...just get on with life and enjoy the hobby as you see best. I don't enjoy having to sift through the thread police while trying to enjoy a thread that otherwise holds my interest.
    Go well.

Initially, I felt responding to this thread would of course blacklist me as elitist, at least in the minds of some. But TJKillians request for seated info is an honest request. Cardinal's dollars are magnificent.

    My 4 seated toppers:

    1862 50c - NGC MS67 (lightly toned/orig skin) ex Evergreen

I will second roadrunner approach in answering TJKillian's request for seated info:

    My top four seated dimes:

    1839 ND 10c PCGS MS-67
    1859 10c PCGS MS-68
    1875 10c PCGS MS-67
    1884 10c PCGS MS-67

But the seated set that gives me the most pleasure was the wonderful seated type set that I bought from lordmarcovan several years ago. Not one of them was slabbed by PCGS. Very few of the coins in the set were valued at over $100 each yet in the collective, it is a formidable type set.

cardinal: The 1795 draped bust in the slab seems to give off the most amount of lustre appearance when shown next to the other slabs. Is that due to the fact it is indeed more lustrous as indicated by its higher grade MS-65 or is that just a matter of seeing that coin at a better angle than the other two?

When looking at the three large photos, the 1795 draped bust once again seems to have the deepest lustre.

Thanks for your help and always a pleasure to see your lovely coins.

So you have become the thread police yourself, I guess. You're telling me what I can say in a post of mine? It's not about YOUR enjoyment. This is a public forum.

I don't find anything wrong with people owning or showing their coins, no matter WHAT the worth. I don't think that ANYONE here is an elitist because they posted in this thread. I just think the kind of elitism that causes someone to make statements like "Collectors only" is an attempt to be exclusive and IS elitist. THAT hurts the hobby.

What do you tell a YN? That someday you'll own a $1000 coin and THEN you'll be a "Collector."

Inferior? Not a chance! There are collectors like myself that adore the 1955 DDO cent much more than the flowing hair dollars. It is a matter of preference. Don't even get me started on my favorite overdate dime, really a variety. Value is only one aspect of the greatness of a coin collection. But it it indeed great to love Cardinal's coins more. I love them too! But like you, I don't even own a single one circulated or uncirculated so I am in the same boat as you!!!

This brings me to the comment I made about my type set that I believe will drive my point home and unify what I think all collectors should feel about their collection and the collections of others:

This is a set that will probably not be completed in my lifetime. I will always enjoy the wonder of coins I do not yet or may never own while being appreciative of the coins I have been lucky enough to acquire over the past 43 years. Even many of the coins I now have are coins I could only dream about when I was a 12 year old coin collector in 1965, a 22 year old collector in 1975, or a 32 year old collector in 1985. So fellow collectors, never let your sense of wonder and dreams die!!

    oreville,

These images were done with my digital camera. While the camera certainly picks up more of the luster than a scanner, I'm FAR from an expert in the photo process.

All three coins are more lustrous than they appear in the images. The two flowing hair dollars have just the palest touch of color, whereas the draped bust dollar is richly (though not deeply) toned. So, when I've shot the flowing hair dollars straight on, up close and centered in the lens, the luster reflects back too much and washes out the image. So, I've needed to angle the coins somewhat and take the photo offset a bit, and some of the luster escapes the image. With the draped bust dollar, the toning impedes the reflection just enough to allow me to take the photo more on center, and more of the luster comes through.

With that said, though, when you see them in person, there is no doubt that the draped bust dollar has the superior luster.

    cherrypickincoin,

I must echo oreville's thoughts -- someone's coin collection can't be summed up as simply being "inferior" or "superior." Collections are as different as are collectors. I have chosen to focus on one minute area of numismatics, and so the sum total of my collection has remained well under 100 pieces for a LONG time, and for many years, my collection had not a single specimen over $1000 in value. Through fortunate trade-ups and lucky opportunities, I have been able to upgrade over the years to where my collection is now, but I still look through all the auction catalogs and marvel at the wonderful diversity of numismatics!

I always like to remember a quotation posted at my high school many years ago:

"There is no one so intelligent that he can learn nothing from me, and there is no one so ignorant that I can not learn from." -- Albert Einstein

    Let keep teaching each other!!

    cardinal,

Excellent post. I do agree with you. I have always loved early coinage more than any other area of numismatics and seeing those silver dollars for me was like meeting Elvis! I simply have never seen any that beautiful. Since my financial ability is limited to about $2,000 per month on coins, I cannot afford any mint state early dollar. Maybe one day! For now I'll admire yours and hope that I get to see such beauties in person one day. Excellent quote by Einstein, by the way. image

hey bohica268, i assure you i am not rich, not at all. but i am patient. it took me many years to acquire my best coins. the "many years" was more significant than the "many dollars".

what matters is not how much you spend, but how much you like what you buy.

the half is not my favorite coin due to value, but due to the coolness of: very few collectors will ever own 1.

btw, although the half is my favorite coin, my favorite complete collection is my jefferson nickels, value for the ENTIRE set = $200 max.

1 last thing, ZERO of my coins is slabed.

Cardinal.... wow....I would give up a kidney for any of those coins, especially the 1794.

Here are my three, with pics for validity. That is my hand......image I understand twodogs reply but no one was trying to be a snob here. He just wanted to see some high end coins, that is it. I am putting together a proof type set AND a VF Barber set. They are equally hard to put together the way that I like them. One is super expensive, the other not so much. I will be just as proud of one as the other when they are finished. And BTW, I am NOT rich. Any of the military guys here will tell you that most people dont get rich in the Navy... And no, I didnt inherit anything either. I am 27 years old, my father works in a meat market, and my step father is a postman. Patience is the key...
