Is this guy a scammer, or am I missing something?

OK - so I'm just kind of starting out, and i'd like to get some great franklins, but this guy,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11973&item=3034673941
sorry, I'm not sure how the linky thing works

I don't know. I was looking at the auctions, and nobody bidding on them, wondering if the prices are too high or what.

The one pictured sure doesn't look that great to me compared to alot I've seen here. Also the "lazer" thing is kind of suspect. It screams "moron" to me. Do you guys trust coins in these slabs? Is this guy over hyping an average coin trying to get a really high price?

guess I'll keep looking.

No scam, gold PCI is just awful and overgrades... consider them ACG Jr.

    LINK

Hahaha. No shortage of links, now.

So he can't spell "laser", and the coin is in a PCI gold-label slab, with about as much "Deep Cameo" contrast as one would expect of an NTC or ACG coin. Still, it might have more contrast than the pic shows, though I guarantee you it wouldn't make DCAM at a respectable service. I don't think it's a "scam" so much as an overhyped coin (both by the seller and the grading service).

At least he didn't quote the PCGS priceguide.

  • Riddlers -

Just click the http button with the little link symbol, and paste in your URL. That's the ticket. image
  • Wow!! I must be sicker than I thought. Five post before I could link!!
  • You were already sick don't worry image jk
  • Thanks guys. I think I've got it now.

I was looking at this sellers feedback. I don't know - even with the 900+, something smells. Seems like some people are pretty mad.

I think I'll take my money and move on.

So those gold label ones are garbage? Wonder why he makes it sound like it's perfect in every way?
I'd have to think someone with that much experience would be more informed.

Is that the Lone Ranger variety? I swear it looks like Franklin is wearing Lone Ranger mask. Is a Deep Cameo sposed to look like that?

I've bought from the seller before. I remember that it was a smooth deal and nothing wrong and good communication, that was a while ago, though. I know he actively pursues 1950-1970 proof coins, especially in CAM and DCAM.

  • I'd like my 23cents in here, to say that RiddlersApprentice (if that is his real name image ) is doing very well to start here in this forum asking questions............from what I have seen here (I have been a wholesale dealer for about 15 years) this group has pretty much got it figured out...........image

Of course that's not my real name. I thought everyone prettymuch used handles around here.
My last name is Ridley, and my friends call me Riddler. I figured I was a beginner, so Apprentice might be a good add-on.

Anyway, I figured finding out from experts would be a good way to start so I didn't get hosed by some slicky-boy.

Run away as fast as you can from that coin. PCi is bad news anytime. The old green slabs have a big insert PVC problem. The new gold slabs are trash.

  • OK so you're saying AGC and PCI is trash. I made a note of that.

How bout NGC? This 53 FBL by the same seller looks like half the lines are missing from the bell!

  • ngc is an excellent and respected grading service. ngc and the host company of this forum, pcgs, are the two premier grading services of coins. on that particular coin series, ngc is stricter on full bell lines than pcgs. it is, however, still about the coin and not the holder.
