Coins worth double or more what you paid for them. ($100 Min value)

ARCOARCO Posts: 4,362 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here are some coins that are worth at least double or more for what I paid. I don't think anybody has ever done this thread before.

I bought this half in a grouping of 16 for $179.00. The sixteen other Good4 halves sold for about $100.00 making this a $79.00 purchase. I think it would sell for $225-$260.00 on Ebay. This is a three-bagger.

This one was the same scenario, paid $190.00 for a lot of 14 barber halves, sold off the others for $135.00 or so making this a $55 coin. Would probably sell for around $150+ on Ebay. Another three bagger.

Paid $135.00 for this Beautiful Fine18 1904-S and sold it for $435.00 on Ebay...I hope the buyer doesn't frequent these boards image

Have some fun and brag a little, show us what you've got!!

The results for a PCGS submission of mine were posted today. One of them was a 1927 $20 that I bought raw on eBay for $340 about a year ago. It came back a MS65.image

I've more than doubled my money on a lot of coins (usually Darkside coins), but I can't think of any specific examples, and very few of those would be over $100.

Oh, wait- I just remembered an Irish shilling I bought for less than $100 that has a Krause value of $500. There are probably a few others in my just-completed Irish collection.

Here's a coin I purchased raw on ebay from a really bad picture. I paid about $230 for it and I think it's worth a little bit more than that. I keep meaning to send this to NGC one of these day's as everyone say's it should be in a 64 holder. mike image

These are from my recent and first submission:

      1 60117256 1919 10C MS64FB paid $70 worth $235
      2 60117257 1918 10C MS64FB paid $70 worth $275
      3 60117258 1920 10C MS64FB paid $30 worth $110
      4 60117260 1942-S 10C MS66FB paid $9 worth $170
I got pretty lucky, I bought these all raw. Plus, I consider myself still a newbie to collecting. I still have 12 more merc's to send in. A lot are nicer than the ones I sent in.

Bought 1928-d Lincoln on a bid board in Tucson Arizona for $26. Sent to ANACS for $20 to be graded and attributed. Came back an MS63RB RPM#1. Sold it on Ebay with the buyer using BUY IT NOW for $700.

Bought 1939 Jefferson nickle from a dealer at a coin show in Arlington Texas for $3. Anacs again and came back 1939 Jefferson MS64 5.5 steps Double Die Reverse #2. Sold if for $200 on Hertitage.

Bought another 1939 Jefferson on Ebay. Paid $3 for an MS64. When I got it it was AU but a very high grade AU. I was disappointed until I turned it over and it was the double die reverse #1. Sold it for $81. (Sorry did not make the $100).

Bought 1857 Flying Eagle on Ebay for $16. Was the double die obverse sold it for $79.

Bought 1936 penny rolls on Ebay and found one double die #2 in very first roll. Found another in the fifteenth roll. It was die #1. Bought each coin for about .16 Sold them for $31 each.

          Thanks Darktone

I bet many folks looked at it and thought it was just an old VF coin.

          I know a dealer that did.image

Probably the best hit ever for me was a 1939-d Jefferson Nickel in BU I bought for 5.00 about 4 years ago in an Indiana coin shop. It had nice steps that looked full. Back then before knowing any better, I sent it into PCI where it came back Ms-64. This is about the time that ICG started up in buisness and I had a free grading certificate. SO I broke it out and sent it to ICG, where it came back Ms-67FS. Boy was I blown away. I ended up selling it on E-bay for 750.00,

Thing is, now that I have more experience in Ms grading an the differences in service's, there's no way this coin should have graded that high. In fact, I dont think it would have made FS designation at PCGS because of a nick in the steps. and definitley not 67.
It was a nice coin, but no way in comparison to the PCGS-67 39-d I have now.

My best current holding is a 1976D Type 1 IKE I both raw for $5. Graded PCGS MS66 and is worth about $300 now. Funny thing is that the dealer who sold it to me felt guilty about charging $5 and kept trying to discount it.

Best all time hit. I bought a 1974D PKOK toned IKE in PCGS MS67 from a major, major dealer about 3 years ago for $2,400. Sold it last year for $8,500, and the new buyer (who I consider the world's foremost IKE collector) got a great dealimage. Sorry, the picture doesn't really do it justice.

And now for the largest percent gain...

A roll of 1956D cents purchased for $4 yielded a single example of 1956D OMM#1 in MS65RD, worth around $350. That's 8 cents to $350. Anyone else gain that sort of percent?

Another - a single $4.50 roll of 1956D cents yielded 28 MS64RD-MS66RD 1956D OMM#2 coins. They value around $40-$75 each. So that's $2.52 to $1650.00 (average) - another rather substantial gain. Couldn't even do that in the stock market on a good day during the dot-boom days.

It's tough to beat the examples of a roll coin making a good grade, but I did buy a
1941-S 5c PCGS MS66FS - in the slab just under three years ago for $37.76 - as of
today it is a pop 17/1 coin.

Should be worth 10-20 times that...maybe more on a good day image
