Doug's Coin Shop In Birmingham, Alabama

I rarely post about coin shops or the like...but I have to say that my trip to Birmingham, Alabama last week was VERY fruitful!

I met Andy...who works at the coin shop about a month ago and he told me that he had some Rainbow Morgans that he purchased from an estate auction. This of course...made me pause...as I love Rainbow Morgans image

He told me they were being photographed and would be back in a couple of weeks.

So I patiently waited for the coins to return to his shop...

He posted a few of them on another forum...

This was one of the threads

Now...normally I look at photographs and assume that perhaps the photo looks better than the coin image NOT true with the coins Andy had for sale...they were sooooo much more beautiful in person!

I was glad that I was able to return to his shop and see them in person.

Not only did Andy have some beautiful Morgan Dollars...he was MORE than willing to give me an awesome deal on them!

Hopefully he will be getting some more Rainbows in soon! I don't know where he is locating these estate auctions but I would certainly like to attend a few of them image Not everyday you see a bunch of Rainbows like he had.

Must be something in the Alabama air!

Eventually I will have to put my collection into a registry set. Never seem to find the time to do that.

I have a nice set of Cameo Morgans...and Rainbow Morgans,
I love coins...image

Sounds great. So is Andy the board member New Kid? And who is Doug? You mentioned Dougs coin shop in your title is why I ask.

I am not sure who is Doug is actually...the owner of the store I believe.

Andy is newkid on this forum...that is correct.

Perhaps he could respond better as to who is who at the coin shop down there in Birmingham (Homewood)

Doug is uofa1285 here at the forum and yes, he is the owner. Great guy with whom I've had the pleasure of dealing.

OOPS! Different Doug. This one is in Little Rock, AR image

Doug is the owner of the shop - Andy and Ethan - the "youngsters" help run the shop - all great guys - Andy's on here a lot lately as NEWKID. We need to get that boy a hobby or something - pretty soon his brain is going to turn to mush! image

It's a little hole in the wall (but then so are all the other coin shops I've seen so far) in the heart of down-town Homewood.

Look for the "Heads" of a Buffalo Nickle to find the place.

With the execption of what I've been collecting for the State Quarter Series, I would say that about half of my coin's have come from Doug's shop.

Like Frank said; Doug, Andy, and Ethan are a great bunch of guys (though there are others that work in the shop as well). Customer loads permitting, all three will gladly take the time to pass on their knowledge to newbies like my self.

  • Thanks for all of the positive response. We have been in business over 20 years here in Homewood. Family owned and operated and every person has a specific duty. Doug (the owner) counts the money, and Ethan & Andy (the worker bees) handle the internet and the selling end. We are listed as newkid and phishinforcoins on PCGS and National-Certified-Rare-Coin on e-bay. We do have a website at www.dougscoin.com with basic everyday stock items listed here. I would say our specialty is Morgan Dollars and certified coins. However, we do carry a good variety of additional U.S. coins and currency. If any of you are in the area please stop in. I am sure we can find something to interest you.

    Have a Great Day!
    Andy & Ethan
