HOLY #*$% THAT'S BEAUTIFUL! You don't see to many of those in RB! I have really got to have that coin... I don't want it for 18,000... but I must bid. I'm going to pray to the coin gods that I win that coin.
PM me if you have any MS63 or higher large cents and half cents. I'm also looking for a PR64RB Two cent piece, a PR64/PR63 3CS, and an 1859 Indian cent in MS62/63.

Hey, it's CC 1, MS 65+ and has a provenance to die for - I really don't think that $18k will be buying that coin.
I'm assuming that this is the coin from Ted Naftzger's all time finest Large Cents Complete Variety Set Circulation Strikes set? It's a very beautiful coin.

Do you guys see the email address of the last bidder?..It shows in the bidder email window to the right..Talk about a great spammer's paradise! Go here pick the email address at you leisure, and spam away..Why does Heitage permit this?
Great looking coin, yes! Very nice. I just don't see the grade 66. >>
Bill Noyes has it listed as 65+. If you think that you are a tougher grader than Bill then I can hear the deafening roar of laughter in the background.

With all due respect as I know you know your coins, I honestly believe that if you saw this same coin in this same holder but did not know the pedigree you'd say it was overgraded by PCGS by at least 2 or 3 points.

Frankly yes because of the following. First I don't grade large cents because they are not my area. Second, even if they were my area I feel that the 11 point mint state system so loved today is a total pile of crap. There's unc, choice unc, gem unc, superb gem unc and fleur de coin (FDC). If anyone feels that they can accurately and consistently cut the hair any finer than that I say that they are full of crock. Third, anyone who is at all familiar with the world of large cents will agree that Bill Noyes is THE toughest grader in the field - if he calls it a 65 (gem unc) plus you will not get any argument from me.
Bill called THAT a 65+? I'm famiiar with Bill's grading and I wouldn't have thought he would have called that more than a 64 what with the the poor strike and the stains.

Agreed. Beautiful coin, but I'd have figured it for an EAC 63 or something.

Well, it's Noyes' photo #21413, the S235 plate coin and CC 1 (HRN: 370, WHS, REN) @ MS 65+. Since I don't grade large cents I'm not arguing, just stating the facts.
When I first saw the coin I thought, "wow, great coin". Then I read the grade on the slab and said, "huh?". I should not be surprised since we have seen so many other early copper coins grotesquely overgraded lately (not just by PCGS). I think that they should leave the grade off of the holder and simply put "C.C. #1" in place of the grade. Calling that coin an MS-66 undermines ones grading credibility, imho.
Trying to grade high end copper from a picture is truly an exercise in futility. No photo can accurately convey the nuances of surface quality, color and luster that are necessary to form an accurate opinion of the coin. One can only get an accurate view of the coin in the copper.
