I,d say so. Those are labeled as URS-6s. Universal Rarity Scale URS= 17 to about 32 known.

It seems there would be more of those around but as stated in the book, less than 32 have been
    reported as of this printing.

    I think are as a legitiment error as the 3-legged variety,or 8/7 1918 D.
And those two are a RS 14 and 9, respectively.
That should make the two-feather variety that much more exciting and valuable I would think.
but not every ordinary collector really knows this one.
    Most do know the famous 3-legged `37 D, and fewer know of the 3 1/2 legged `36 D, and then the 8/7 `18 D.
Only the serious Buff collectors and hard core numis know of this rare Buff variety.

  • coiNuts, The two feather is a legit error, but there isn't a lot of interest in them. I have a 1936S/S nickel in PCGS MS62 that has the most dramatic Mintmark error in coins. But, there isn't a lot of interest in them. Hold on to your two feathers!! image

The two feathers are fun to find but I haven't found anyone willing to pay a premium for one.

These and other errors like the 'trumpet tail S' dimes were featured in one of the monthly gray sheets.

Different and unusual but going to need much more publicity before they begin to move. Maybe the book will help.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

They are overpolished dies, juat like the 37D buffalo with the missing leg. There are a lot of other anomalies caused by overpolished dies that nobody cares about, like throatless Lincolns and raised roof Lincolns just to name a couple. I guess some catch on, others don't. As for the feather stuff - I think there are too many cases for it to be called anything but common. The reason the URS is so low on them is because that's all that were reported to the author of the book.

Incidently, the VDB-less memorial Lincolns are caused by the same thing. Breen has one listed for 1972D, but there are many of them, to include 1989. His listing makes the 1972D seem "rare" but it's not...I stopped saving them after a couple of rolls of them, and eventually got rid of those rolls. I discontinued my journey into his misunderstanding. Remember the big to-do about the 1989P cents missing the VDB? They shot up past $50 for a while (ads in CW). Now you couldn't get anyone to listen about them. The bottom does fall out on polished die strikes. I think for the better part they are marketing ploys to bring interest to current stock, and once that's depleted who could care?

These are kind of cool, but I'll admit, I've never seen one sell for a premium. I collect Buffalo's first and foremost, and yet I don't think I'd pay much more for 2-feather varieties than the same date/mint/grade with 3-feathers.

I may change my mind in the future, though.

  • Just to add a bit more..........I have found many other dates, that are not in the cherrypickers, and it looks like you could put together a nice sub-set of the two feathers............I have at least 20 different date/mintmark combinations so far..................

  • Keep those 2 feathers you shouhld do a search for 2 feathers youll see I have asked the question many times. I know have over 14 of them of various dates I picked up before I lost my job. There of the same ilk as the 3 legged and 3.5 legged.

I will always pick up a 2 feather for I know sooner or later they will catch on and the price of them will skyrocket .
