I think they get a moderate amount of attention, but could use more. Although, I don't recall a 1793 Chain cent in XF ever being ignored here.

In general, unc. or proof coins are "sexier" to chat about. Circ. stuff is ok, just not the "sexy" topic.
You can only chit chat for so long about vf barber dimes, no?

There's just no interest in them here. By default, a coin being discussed is assumed to be uncirculated. Heck, I've seen posts where MS63 coins are referred to as "lower grade."

I think circulated coins get some attention... perhaps they deserve more attention, especially classic coins and better dates

They don't get much attention in a lot of places and that is fine with me. As someone else would say...

Many times the best extant example of a coin is circulated. Such coins are
interesting. Even circ examples of coins which are readily available in unc
can be interesting in many cases. Any coin which is collected in unc is also
collectible in circulated grades, though in some cases will have much lower
    or even nominal value.

Much of the reason circs aren't as popular to post here is that scans just don't
seem to do these coins justice in many cases. Many coins are posted which
are nearly perfect and when a rare VG with slight damage shows up, it tends
to pale in comparison. Lots more people collect circ coins here than post pictures
    or talk about them here.

I think you're on to something. Many here collect "finest known" moderns and even some classics, so they would be less than enthusiastic about "ordinary" coins. If someone is putting together a set of MS-68 to 70 memorial cents, he's probably not going to pee his pants over an AU 1912-S Liberty nickel or a trade dollar in XF.

Weird people (like those who collect chopmarked coins) oftentimes don't even look at gem BU coins, so we usually don't have much to talk about over here on the US Coin Forum. Darksiders are more tolerant. image

I prefer using the bathroom. lol

Yeah, it seems most people at this particular forum collect high grade moderns. But I've observed this at shows also. Most seem to go for MS coins....just my impression.

I think circulated coins are not getting the attention they deserve here. Just think of the stories a circulated Barber half or Seated dime or gold eagle could tell. It's certainly been lots of places that "top pop" modern coin has never been. The odd thing is, there aren't a lot of posts about circulated coins here, but when I run a poll it seems that the voters actually prefer older circulated coins to modern MS/Proof ones. Maybe a lot of the people who like older circulated stuff are sitting out there mostly lurking and not posting!

Other than my 2 registry sets, all I collect is circs. I like being able to hold em and not worry about fingerprints and such. I'm gonna fill this dang Dansco one of these days!

You'll also notice that the majority of the older coins that get posted are uncs. This is
not a classic/ modern issue. There are some great modern circs too, but these are rarely
pictured unless they have an error or something.

There are also no limits to the number of threads which can be started.

I suspect the lurkers tend to be more "modern" than we are. Perhaps we need a poll.image

Circulated coins definitely get less attention than the Unc. coins. That is quite odd to me. Circulated coins obviously are much easier to find in the popular series and afford little challenge to collectors.

For me Unc. coins just require a deep pocketbook. Go to David lawrence Rare coins or Heritage and see how many ultra nice original VF or XF coins are for sale in the barber halves or quarters (as an example). Right now Heritage has a 1898-O, 1897-S and 1901-O Barber halves for sale in the lofty grades of MS65, but nary a single XF coin.

Circulated coins are more exciting to me in every series and denomination in numismatics...er except perhaps Gold issues. Gold is awesome in Unc. I would rather have a beautifully toned XF or AU walker than an MS one any day of the week.
