Crooked 1938-D Dime?

I was placing this recent aquisition in a new 2x2 when I noticed the D mint mark is turned so much that it is parallel to the branch rather than inline with the "E" in "DIME".
I can see how the D is turned a little different for different years, but this is my first 1938-D and wondered if this was normal for this year or just a known variety.

My picture might be a little too dark to tell exactly, but the mint mark is pretty much oriented just like yours.
I knew the mint marks were hand punched during this time frame, I just had not seen one rotated that much. The only time I've paid attention was when I was learning the diagnostics for detecting real/fake 1916-D.
I was just curious if every 38-D was like this or weither this is a minor die variety.
good question.
I have a `36 S like your D. Wondering about it as a variety too.
I guess if there all ,or most all,are like that then that probably
means `no big deal`.
Surely there are some merc collectors out there that can shead some more light on this issue

Very Nice 38-D merc. Should come back in VERY high MS holder.
I like it better than mine in a MS66FB holder!

The only listing in Wexler's book "Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes" is a D over D mint mark. Nothing else listed for that year.
Mint marks for Mercury Dimes are all over the map. This is normal as far as I know.
