Does anyone collect blank planchets?

I've seen very few and was curious if anyone collects or has any blank planchets.

I don't collect them, but was received one (for a Lincoln Cent) in change or found it in a roll. I also found a die trial Lincoln cent dated 1970-D, but I don't remember where I put it. I think it is in a box somewhere around here.

Actually, I've got a 5 coin set in a snap lock holder.
    Kinda neat.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • I have a cent blank and it currently occupies the 1914-D Lincoln hole in my collection. Hey, it might have been a 1914-D...if only it had been struck. image

Here is a site with a bunch of them:

I have about six blank cent planchets. They're nothing spectacular, but they are cool.

I purchase a blank quarter from my local coin dealer, and then soon found one in a Mint Bag of State Quarters.

I know what you mean. I do buy stuff (not limited to coins) based on a cool factor.

I rationalized buying a blank cent for $2.00 by telling myself I'd give it to my nephew. I kept it instead.

  • I found a dime planchet in change. The really weird thing is that it has significant wear. I must be the only moron who really looks at my change, besides you guys.

I have a complete set of business strike blanks in denomination 1¢-50¢ in both Type 1 (not upset) & Type 2 (upset) and a set of unplated cent blanks in both Type1 & 2.
The JFK blanks are both error blanks being that they are overweight. The Type 1 weighs 187 grs & the Type 2 weighs 188grs. The normal weight tolerance is 175 grs + or - 7grs.
They are in my 97 error collection. I can't really prove they're from 1997 but nobody can prove they're not. image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I always find one in every collection I purchase. My favorites include a 1 cent blank planchet for a copper-nickel indian and a planchet for a steel cent.
  • I dont collect them, but I have 3 modern blank penny planchets. 1 is an unplated zinc core without a rim, one is an unplated zinc core with an uspset rim, and the last is a copper plated zinc core with upset rim. Together they make an informative set showing how modern pennies are made.
Retail coin dealers, the only people who can buy a $10 coin for $2, and sell it for $30.
  • Nope......not for me. Looks more like a "slug" to me anyway! I've never found one with a strike that appealed to me, as the vast majority are so weakly struck so as to prevent discerning even which mint released them into circulation! On top of that, i suspect most are counterfeit..........the one's i've seen don't even have a reeded edge!

Geeze.........what some people will try to pull over the eyes of an experienced numismatist! image

    He said,` Quarter?`
    I said `OK That sounds good.`

I have a bunch of quarter type 2 planchets I bought when I lived in Miami from the dealer guy I knew. I have a few cents and nickels and dimes, too.

I have one SAC type 2 planchet but it has the chop marks on it. image

Now all I need is an SBA, JFK and IKE planchet. image

I have a blank Rhode Island state quarter planchet image that PTVETTER gave me. He got it from a mint bag.

I met a guy from Oklahoma who is putting together a set of blank planchets (not gold, though). He said he's only lacking a few (Trade Dollar, 20 cent, and a couple others) but has some tough ones like the 2 cent and both 3 cent types.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I've got a Type 2 Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter & Half I put in a whitman mint set holder. Cool factor also. Thought about getting a IKE to complete the set, but I can think of too mant real coins for $50 I'd rather have.

I've got about 200 different blank planchets, but unfortunately they are mostly
    unidentified and mostly token planchets.

Type 1 planchets of US coins tend to be much more difficult to find, especially for
    the later years.
