Why won't bidders READ???

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
My first sentence in my description says I do NOT take PayPal.

I do not ship out of US.

And YET:

I enter listing. It sells. I get an email from a bidder asking if I will ship to Canada. I say no but will ship to a friend or relative in the US.

He sends by email the US address that he will use if he wins.

I say that address will be fine.

He ASSUMES that I am referring to the ORIGINAL Canadian address.

I correct him and reiterate that if he wins I will be shipping to the US address.

He wins.

I send winning notice.

He sends Canadian address.

He has (0) feedback.

I am betting I have a NPB.

Such a chore for some dummy who can't understand anything. They shouldn't allow THEM to have money let alone be BIDDING IN AUCTIONS.

hassle hassle hassle

For such a SIMPLE matter.

    topstuff,

Take a look at one of my auctions.

Notice the 5 point, upper case bright red notice appearing at both the top and the bottom that says "NO CREDIT CARDS THROUGH PAYPAL"? Notice in the auction description body where it says "No credit cards through PayPal"? Notice in shipping instructions where it says "NO CREDIT CARDS THROUGH PAYPAL"? It also says it twice in the notices I send out at the end of the auction. That's a total of six times the bidder is exposed to the message.

Guess what? I still get people paying with a credit card.

Guys, let me be the first to tell you something! There is a larger than realized portion of our population that don't read very well or can't read at all. I know, I spent 30 years working with some of them. And guys, I'm not speaking about recent immigrants....Ken

I would bet that in most of these cases the buyer reads quite well.
He or she is trying to do what THEY want regardless of your policies.
In some cases they get by on it. Why they won't ask up front rather than trying to ram-rod it through is beyond me. If someone says
MO or Paypal only, I will still ask if I can send a personal check with references. I hate MO's and really don't have the time to hit the PO several times a week for a MO. I usually will not even bother with a seller if they only take Paypal or MO.......or Liens on your house.

That's the very reason I put in my auctions that I accept any payment, ship anywhere and won't charge a single red cent to do it and if you don't like it you can return it for a FULL refund, no restocking fees, no BS.

I make it easy for the buyer to send me his hard earned $$.

Dog.....well, I....USED....to do that too. When I had my shop open.

Now I am retired and ONLY do things MY way.

Of course, when Poopal froze two grand of MY money for 3 weeks and then charged me a stinking BUCK NINETY FIVE to get it in a lump sum instead of at a dribbling $500 per month, THAT entered into my thinking on pay policies also.

But I agree. When I had the coin/pawnshop and was offering JUNK, I made it so convenient to pay that I would deliver it to the men's room in the Tijuana BUS STATION if necessary.

Any COINS offered from here on out will be sufficiently desirable that the buyer will accomodate MY wishes.

THIS particular auction was on some of the crap I still have left from the pawn end of the place. (a knife)

Another point to keep in mind. While there are the majority of people that CAN read, there are a lot that lack severely in reading comprehension.........Ken

I'm not a dealer with a shop, just a collector with some extra stuff.
I don't sell much and haven't had any problems so far but if I ever do you can bet I'll reevaluate my TOS. image

It is annoying. Especially the paypal part. When I list coins over $300 dollars or so I do not take paypal as it eats up good money. I will put in BOLD no paypal and still get payments the next day from the winner via paypal. Then I look and the amount I have is $10 bucks lighter due to paypal fees.

I have had to actually change my e-mail address for some auctions so that bidders can't pay via paypal unless I give them the E-mail address first.

I lost a good sale about 6 months ago On an 1877 Au-58 Indian, cause of this, I clearly stated that I do not accept PAY-pal. Guy uses buy it now, and then wants me to register with PAY-pal so he can use his credit card.

    What nerve!

That was absolute pain, getting my fee's back from E-bay on that one!

It sure can be annoying. In an auction a long time ago now, I specified "NO PAYPAL", and the bidder won the item, used my email address, and sent a payment to paypal. I had never even signed up! Since I was thinking about trying it out anyways and I didn't want to cause any problems, I signed up so that I could get the money.

Speaking of paypal, is there any way in your preferences in paypal to say something like "Don't accept Credit card payments - current balances only" or anything like that?

Not that I've been able to find. I wish there were. The instant payment notice doesn't specify whether or not it's a credit card payment, so I have to check the site each time and deny the payment if it's CC.

In my listings it states in big red letters: PLEASE, no personal checks. In my email notifications, it says the same.

I still get personal checks. Not only that, but, they are always written on "The Bank of Billy Bob" in Saltlick, ARK. or something similar. Everyone appears to think that it doesn't apply to them.

another problem is paypal itself ( the conniving thieves)

you dont have to sign up ! that should be disallowed .

anyone with an email address can get money !

    how convenient

    maybe a class action suit

I actually thought about doing my listings like this.

I'd probably still get credit card payments, though.

My question is why don't any of you who don't take paypal, DON'T. I myself as a seller take paypal on anything and I usually don't buy unless I can pay by Paypal. Convienence is everything. I sell books, including coin books, so the profit isn't a heck of a lot. But I will do most anything for business. And Paypal is so CONVIENENT. Steve
