Best Light to View Cameos In? - ( Picture of cameo AH Kennedy) ?

I just opened 30 1964 Proof Sets.

2 AH Kennedys, couple of toned coins and to me lots of Cameos or better coins. Now that was just looking at them in my living room on the couch with no lights on and just sunlight lighting up the room.

I move to my desk area and put on my Ott light and the coins do longer look cameo or better to me.

So now I am puzzled. Are they or not. What is the best light to view coins in to determine cameo or better.

Thanks.

Lori

Would this be cameo or dcam? Picture is taken still in the mint cello.

I think the best way is to have an incandescent light or two at angles around the coin. And have a square of black felt for the coin to reflect to get that black and white contrast. I found it helpful to differentiate between light frost and cameo frost. I'm sure others have different approaches.

Ott or Reveal are both terrible for evaluating proof coins. Great for photographing them, but not for trying to grade them. I use a 100 watt incandescent desk lamp, and turn off the overhead fluorescent light.

Is that AH a cameo in your opinion?

I really need to see em in person, the picture you have up doesn't seem cam at all to me.

I've also found that soft, angled lighting is needed to appreciate the full texture of the frost -- the exact opposite of the light needed reveal the reflective fields, making them so tough to image.

    Shylock,

    That's not a picture, that's art!

    Lori,

If the image is an accurate representation of what you're seeing through the celo, the contrast is light and not enough for the designation.

All DCAM coins look best when viewed through a Slab-Caddy

Holy smokes what a picture. Shylock, you have elevated coin photography to high art. Incredible.
