1981-S T-2 SBA?????????

Here is a scan of the mint mark. Do you think it is a T-1 or 2 SBA? image

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Russ is correct both times.

    If a 79-S it looks like a type 2
    If a 81-S it looks like a type 1

    Type 3. image

FYI, for a real world reference, compare to the mintmarks in a 1980 set (all same as 1981 Type 1) and a 1982 set (all same as 1981 Type 2).

I thought Type 2 was the clear mintmark on the 79 & 81 proof dollar. How does it go? image

The types are the result of three different mintmark punches being used. When a punch wore out it was replaced. Here is the progression:

    -----------------------------------------
    79-S Type 1 - Filled mintmark
    -----------------------------------------
    79-S Type 2 - Clear mintmark
    80-S
    81-S Type 1
    -----------------------------------------
    81-S Type 2 - Redesigned Clear mintmark
    -----------------------------------------

The difference between the first two punches is quite clear (hehe). The difference between the second and third (both of which are "clear" in appearance) is much more subtle, leading to many 81-S Type 1 coins being inadvertently (or intentionally) misattributed.

The fact that the 79-S Type 2 is the same as the 81-S Type 1 doesn't help matters either.

There are some good photos available at smalldollars.com under the SBA section. Finally, note that the same mintmark variations apply to all denominations, not just the dollar.

Thats a Type 1, a Type 2 looks like its been carved out and hit with a plane(shaved off the top)! Type 1 looks drilled out!

supercoin, my understanding is that the 1981 type 2 mintmark was ONLY used in late 1981. In 1982 an entirely NEW mintmark was used. Please confirm. Thanks. Steveimage

I've just been through this and have learned the lesson.

The Type 2 SBA 1981 has a distinct bulbous serif, especially on the bottom end, and can be clear or filled.

Whew, that was a hard lesson for me to learn...

Oops. image I double-checked it with a 1982 set I have here and it appears Steve is right.

I could have sworn that when I looked at a 1982 set before that it was the same as the 1981 type 2, but I've never heard of two 1982 types so I must have been mixed up somehow.

I did double-check the 78-S and that information is correct.

    So, new list:

    -----------------------------------------
    78-S
    79-S Type 1 - Filled mintmark
    -----------------------------------------
    79-S Type 2 - Clear mintmark
    80-S
    81-S Type 1
    -----------------------------------------
81-S Type 2 - Redesigned Clear mintmark with bulbous serifs
    -----------------------------------------
82-S - Redesigned mintmark with sharp serifs
    -----------------------------------------

    Thanks Steve!
