Wow, looks like you might have scored a type II Lincoln and SBA and maybe even the Jeff. But it is really hard to tell from the scans. I don't think the Kennedy, Washington or Roosie are. But it was defintely worth a $21 gamble.
I think it's a regular Type 1 set. Those are also "clear S". The '81 Type 1 has the same mintmark as the '79 Type 2. In other words, both types for '81 are "clear S". The difference on the '81 Type 2 is that the serifs are more pronounced. I can't tell that one way or the other from that image. Thus I have to assume that, since the SBA alone is about $100 in 68DCAM, this ain't a Type 2 set.
this can be difficult to determine with the coin in hand. the best way to learn and know is to be able to have confirmed T1 and T2 coins--------identified by someone who knows, not necessarily a slabbed coin--------side by side to look at. with that said, the SBA in the scan appears to be a T1 from the poor scan while the Kennedy looks more like a T2 to me.
you really need to be able to glass these with good light to be sure.
C'mon somebody post a link to that great article someone had so at least he has a reference.
Once you learn the differences, you can spot type Is from IIs without a glass and from a foot away. The type IIs are fatter, more squat looking and the tips of the S (serifs) are bulbous, they just look funny. Type Is are round and symmetrical. Don't buy into the clear S theory. There are actually 3 types of MM for 81. And all have clear S.
