Proof 2c pieces- whaddya think of this one?

1872, toned PR64 RB, on eBay
My proof 2c piece Registry set has only a single coin in it (and is the #4 set. But maybe that has something to do with the fact that there are only four sets registered, LOL).
Here is the single piece I own right now, an 1868 PR64 RD. Almost, but not quite, a cameo.
Maybe it's time to add another? Is that toned 1872 worthwhile? I like the colors, but they're a tiny bit mottled for my taste. And they will probably drive the price beyond what I'm willing to pay. Still, I'd like to hear your thoughts. Should I stick with full red coins like the one I have, or should I delve into the nicely colored RB coins (though not necessarily the one linked to?)
On my budget, I'll probably be lucky to add a coin a year to that set.

Would pass on it if I were you. The guy is a crook in my eyes if he charges a 10% restocking fee for returns. If you are looking for a nice proof 2 center talk to WWW on these boards. I think he has one for sale. I cant remember if he said that he was going to keep it or not but I am sure that he could be persuaded. His coin doesnt have a restocking fee and blows the one on ebay out of the water.

Say, Don- what are you doin' on the Lightside? I know it's been dull on the Darkside lately, but I didn't think you came back over here that much these days.
Coin Lt.- thanks for the tips.
I'm not totally sure I want to pursue the 2c set, to tell the truth. It might be more fun to just continue with my "freestyle" 19th century proof collection (which consists of a whopping three coins at the moment, both US and world).

I respectfully disagree. While i do indeed like white coins, toned coins are more appealing to many folks than white coins.
We don't like the same food for every meal, many of us like a variety of TV shows and most us like going to different vacation destinations...
Anyway, just some food for thought. Different food.

<< <i>Now I see why Don stays on the Darkside most of the time.
Why is that?
I also believe the advice you received was not sound. But there I go again... offering an opinion (like all else. Here, or "there".)
So.. whaddya think...about the coin ?

Personally I LOVE old copper with lots of luster and color. This one fits perfectly my criteria of "Monster" when these old pre-1900 coppers are discussed.
I've purchased coins from this Seller and his coins match the photos pretty well.
-I'd also guess it's going to go for some serious cash as these Two Cent'ers rarely come with neat colors.
Back to the topic of the coin itself, I think the toning will probably command a premium and lift the coin out of the range I'm willing to pay. Particularly as I have a more critical eye when it comes to colors (I like colors, but I hate asymmetrical or mottled toning). I like the colors on that coin, but not the mottling and the one or two small spots on the reverse. The mottling is pretty light, though, and I think the colors more than compensate for that and the specks. It's a pretty coin. I might wait for another with lighter, less mottled colors, but with that same "look". (I might be waiting a long time, too.)
It was a colorful RB coin that sparked my interest in 2c pieces. When I was too late to purchase that coin, I bought the 1868 I have. It's not a colorfully toned coin, but I like the light cameo on it.

Check out this beauty. NGC PF65RB with amazing toning. I've played with the idea of selling it
but I can't stand to part with it just yet. Good luck on your quest.
I have some more images of it here.
Properly imaging toned proof copper is very difficult as my images show.

WWW, I can see why you would be reluctant to part with that one! Lovely coin, even for one with my prejudices against certain kinds of toning! Yours doesn't look mottled at all!

This reply is concerning the thread on 2¢ pieces. I am the seller and do charge a 10% charge as you can see in my auctions but not for the reasons that you think. I want to keep reasonable bids on my auctions and just use that verbiage to remind people that I am not running approval auctions. I would forgive the 10% restocking fee for anyone that had a legitamate reason for returning the item other than the fact that they just paid too much money for the item.

That looks like an awesome coin, and I think you will do well on it, regardless of whether I bid or not. I have to check my finances and think about it a bit before I make up my mind. Even if I do bid, I don't think I have much chance of winning it.

<< <i>I like the 72 better than the 68. Much better by the pics. K >>
Nic, that might be because I did the pics of the 1868 on my flatbed scanner, which does not show the depth of mirrors on proof coins. Then again, it might also be because my 1868 is untoned, and MrD's 1872 is colorfully toned. If you like color, the 1872 is definitely the coin for you. If you like contrast or red, mine is probably better.

By the way, greattoning uses a great deal of light when taking his photos and you have to interpret them.
His return privilege of 10% probably keeps some people from going wild with the bidding but hey, it's a free country, which of
course sometimes leads to people doing what they want to do instead of what they're asked to do, like critiquing (sp?) things
other than what they are asked to critique. While John may think he's a crook, at least he told you why and you can draw your own conclusions.
Anyway, WWW does have a pretty cool two center, however, he may not let loose of it.

Why don't you stay a while and post some more?

comment was pretty good- I guess you should have just left it at that.
As to the coin in question, I like it. But I'm not sure I'll bid on it, for a variety of reasons, none of which have anything to do with the 10% restock fee or the seller. More likely, it's the matter of my bank and credit card balance...
(...man, my typoing stinks tonight!)

To answer your question, I like it. I don't have any 2c pieces, and I find them fascinating. Considering the mintages of those items, the prices seem low, in relative terms.
I must apologize for my post as I dont know you personally. Hopefully the PM that I sent you explains some and qualifies my statement some.
I would highly recommend, however, that you change your policy on the 10% return priv. I say this not to benefit myself in anyway at all. I say it to benefit your profit margin on what seems to be above average to excellent coins. Like I said in the PM, perception is everything and the perception that comes from a 10% restocking fee is:
1. The coin isnt as nice as the pictures make it show, better bid low.
2. He is trying to stick me with the coin, better bid low and be safe
3. He doesnt know how this business works in regards to returns so he must be a novice
4. If he is a novice then the coin is probably low end for the grade, better bid low
That is what goes thru my head when I see a restocking fee like that. Give your bidders a chance, I think that they will pleasantly surprise you.

John

You're missing the point. If they are selling for record prices, great. My point is that they would probably sell for bigger prices if there was not a 10% restocking. That is all. I know that I would bid on some of his coins if there was no 10% fee and everyone here on the board will tell you that I will pay excellent money for a beautiful coin. But my bid will NEVER be placed on any of his coins until his restocking fee changes.
I will not pay 200 dollars to look at a coin that I think is worth 2000, or even crazier 1000 dollars to view a 10000 coin!! Especially a coin that I only have a picture or scan to go by. You ever seen a doctored coin in a PCGS holder? Ever see an AT coin in an NGC holder?
Well, they exist and I dont want to pay 10% to return a coin that I am not happy with due to those reasons or overgrading etc.
Dealers send me and many other people on this board five figures of coins ON APPROVAL. Mr. D doenst even have to do that. All he has to do is wait for payment and send the coin. If the person sends it back he can get his final value fee back from ebay and all he is out is a listing fee.
Have you ever tried to sell a coin to a dealer with just a scan or over the phone? You know what kind of prices they will quote you without seeing the coin? Probably something very close to bluesheet and certainly not more that greysheet. They will offer a lot more for a beautiful coin if they can look at it first. Otherwise you are just losing money. The above restocking fee principle is the same premise. I just think mr. d could make more money by offering better terms. That is all.
And to new collectors, or collectors getting into higher priced items, pls know that these kind of fees ARE NOT the norm and you should NOT have to keep a coin you dont like because of a 10% restocking fee!!
