I recently reported that I had cracked out a 1949 Franklin and sent it in for certification. Because I had sent 2 coins of the same date in at the same time, I inadvertantly reported the wrong grade....Here is what I sent in. Anyone want to guess what it graded at PCGS?..

Now an educated guess would require seeing the coin, maybe a BB for AT?

my guess is it was a gallery-mint replica, so pcgs net-graded it as f-12.

I would just like to note that I placed my guess prior to the image of the coin being posted. Thus, if it turns out I was right, it has nothing to do with grading skill!

Edit: AARRGGHHHH!!! I was getting a red x when I posted the above.

Plenty of "diamonds in the rough" out there in other companyies' holders. It pays well to take the time to look at plenty of holders other than PCGS. If you have good grading skills, then you can crack lots of coins out of 3rd tier services' holders and have them go into a PCGS holder.

Don't just summarily dismiss all lower tier services' holders!! Good job Ken!

Now you know why I said the things I said about the 10 or 12 TruGrade Franklins you saw. You mistakenly felt I was "flaming" you about your post. The reality was I simply wanted you to retain judgement and to remain open-minded. If you believed all the posts on this Forum about ACG, you may never have taken the time to assess that '49 MS-65 FBL and you would have missed a real bargain!! Right? I've not yet seen a TruGrade Franklin, yet I look forward to seeing their grading in person.

Like I said before, there are plenty of "diamonds in the rough" residing in 2nd and 3rd tier services' holders. It is worth it to look through some boxes. You've shown good grading skills and can do well cherry picking the better coins.

The close-minded Members that summarily dismiss those coins are missing some real bargains. Glad to see you did so well with that coin! Hey, now you can try and do the same with a '49-D!!

Not only possible, but for real. I did a little slab hunting earlier today but didn't find anything that interested me.
I did find a jewelry store yesterday whose owner invited me back to look at and buy Franklins. He said that he has thousands, many in original rolls and some complete sets. Can't wait to go back....Ken

Ken- You may have found a super nice opportunity there. If you find some true, original shotgun rolls, you should work hard to negotiate a deal. Good luck with your searching. That's a lot coins to review.

Dcam, at the rate that I look at and judge coins, I'm thinking a couple of months to go there and get through all of those coins....Ken...PS,I'm very meticulous.

Ken- Sometimes those small shop owners that don't specialize in coins can be lacking in patience and it is EASY to over stay your welcome. Try to separate the wheat from the chaff very quickly. If you think there is some real potential to those coins, then you want to BUY SOMEthing during that first look. He'll have a lot more patience once he has a little of your cash in his hands. If there is little potential, then you have to choose how much time you want to devote to the endeavor. Good luck!

I saw some truegrade Frankies at the Denver coin show, around 15 of them... They were terrible... This was just a small sample..... though, I do believe that ACG, Truegrade, ICG can screw up the other way and either grade a coin correct or even undergrade it.

I cracked this out and submitted it....1954-S SEGS MS65FBL Franklin 50c ...Came back PCGS MS64 FBL...Not too bad in my opinion.....Ken
