Who grades chopmarked Trade Dollars?

I seem to remember that PCGS or NGC might be doing this now. Anyone know?---------BigE

Yes, PCGS is now grading chopped marked trade dollars. They even have a registry set for them.

ANACS does a net grade, NCS does a details grade, PCGS and SEGS do a numerical grade ignoring the chops.

In your experience, does PCGS bodybag chopmarked Trade dollars for being cleaned? Most chopmarked Trade dollars out of China have been cleaned at one time or another. It seems a little odd to me for PCGS to bodybag a Trade dollar that has major design elements obliterated by chopmarks for a cleaning...

DDR - I have a few that have obvious hairlines from cleaning that are slabbed. I think you are right in that they are a bit more lenient on these.

Kind of different to see a coin with post Mint damage from circulation graded Mint State 64 isn't it.
I wonder if PCGS will grade the other denominations that have been choppedmarked?

This is the MS64 in question. I've seen all the high grade 74CC's and this coin would without a doubt be the second finest if not for the chops:

I noticed that PCGS states that piece of the coin was actually removed when they were chopmarked, wouldn't one have to accumulate quite a bit of these "clippings" to make it worth while?-------------BigE

PCGS didn't word that quite right. Most chops did not take any metal, although some took a pretty good chunk for assay purposes.

Interesting that this coin was minted in Carson City Nevada, took a train & stagecoach to San Francisco California, sailed across the ocean then landed in Canton or Shanghi, was passed around at least one bank or store owner who put his mark of authenticity on it and then later came back home where it was disowned by it's own government. Then it went to California again, this time to Newport Beach where it got slabbed then tradedollarnut ended up with it.
Also interesting is that assembling a complete chopped Trade set is considered almost an impossibility.
