Coins back from NCS/NGC

It took a while but I have it back! 1850-O half I bought as AU coin for $225 but I really heated the toning. So I sent it to NCS to get rid of the fugly toning.
Before NCS

Well they did. And now the coin resides in NGC AU53 holder and looks so much better too.
After NCS

Now a little bit of sad news. There is damage that even NCS cannot fix. Following coin is a warning and an example how a $1000 coin can be ruined so nobady will make that mistake again. I bought it with the problem already so it wasn't my loss. Now it resides in UNC details NCS holder. It's a shame because it would be MS66/67RED coin otherwise. I'm very, VERY tempted to send it to SEGS to see what grade it would get.

What's wrong with the IHC? Is that PVC on the coin?

Two questions:
1. For Sadysta1 - Why did you buy the coin if you didn't like its looks? Was your thought to have it cleaned, errr I'm mean curated, from the start?
2. For all - In your opinion, if the After NCS coin was submitted directly to NGC or PCGS, would they bag it for being cleaned?

littlewitcher, the IHC has this one very visible spot (could be unrinsed dipping solution or something else).

Barry half I bought at the show and the toning did not look as bad + wanted to try out NCS. IHC I bouhgt of ebay (cheap) I went for monster strike and surfaces.

I don't want to be unkind, but I presume you posted this info for feedback, so I'll give some:

I found your post depressing.

To each his or her own, but in my opinion you've taken what was an attractive, original half dollar that had survived uncorrupted for 150+ years and you've had NCS convert it into a coin which now looks like (and obviously is) a cleaned coin.

You have the right to do what you want to coins that you own, and if you enjoy the 'new' look of your coin thats great. I would not assume, however, that the majority of collectors or dealers agree with you and, if and when you do decide to sell it, I would expect plenty of potential buyers to say no thanks, I prefer original coins.

I personally wouldn't touch it, but thats just me. While I detest dipping of any coin, I think it is most offensive when done to an AU or XF coin creating a look that is wholly unnatural and screams 'cleaned' in a loud numismatic voice.

To Barry - I suspect NGC or PCGS would probably slab this piece if submitted raw as I guess it was not harshly cleaned.

On the half dollar, I prefered the before NCS version. If I was looking for an 1850-O half I'd have bought it before I would one that looked like the after image, at least from how they look in the scans. They may look different in person.

I feel the same way as conder & singapore. The before coin looked orig to me, maybe a bit dark, but orig. Worth XF/AU money. The "conserved" coin looks dipped AU to me. Worth? An eBay coin, I wouldn't buy it.

sadysta1, you, my friend, have been duped into performing a great disservice to the numismatic community. your 1850-o half looked much, much better in the before image.

Wow, this is GREAT news. I just realized, thanks to sadysta1's post, that I can open my very own coin conservation business for only $3.99, which is the cost for a jar of Jewel Luster coin dip. For $20 per coin, I can make your choice original 1800's silver coins with dark tone look like a 2001 Roosevelt dime. Every coin in your collection will now match. I shall call my new company CCCSFY (Cheap Coin Cleaning Service For Yahoos).

As far as sending you IHC to SEGS..................WHY? Even if they call it MS-69, it's still the same coin: Unc Details NET AU. Go ahead, spend another $20 for nothing. Keep fueling these plastic peddlers. Feed the fungus.......watch it grow.

Like a few others, I also liked the pre-NCS look much more than the post-NCS look. Pre-NCS, the coin was very original-looking to me. I felt that it was fairly attractive. Post-NCS? Sorry, but I just don't like that look. "Dipped and washed out" seems like a fair description based on a mere image.

This is your coin, and you have to like it. But, since you posted here, I assume that you are soliciting opinions...

In any case, I am happy for you that you now have a coin that is pleasing to you.

Dipping hurts a coin most if it is clearly a circulated coin. Dipping this coin, in my opinion, did not help it at all. The coin should have been left alone.

Thanks for the update and the photos. I have been considering trying NCS myself. Experimenting is one of the pleasures I get from my hobbies and there is nothing like first hand experience.
