Should NGC be held responsible for damage caused by that eye appeal!

I believe if they are going to reward people for toning(giving them a star), they should be responsible for any damage in the future. If it is determined later that the coin was or will be damaged by the toning, they should be liable for monetary damages! Lets say PCGS and some other services came forward and said that coin should not have even been slabbed because of damage. Giving a star is a form of Net Grading, I believe Net Grading was started to cover a companys butt, should they be held accountable for that star if it shouldnt be there?

    wallstreetman, Do you mean should they be responsable if the toning changes and hurts the coins value? If so I think this would be covered under the usual guarrentee. mike

    At the time or in the future! Also, what if I purchase a coin with a star and everyone says it shouldnt be there, its ugly?

    so, if they didn't give a star the toning would not have caused the damage? Interesting point. How do you base monetary damage? If the coin is damaged, I would think the grade guarantee will cover it, with or without a star.

    It is the new american way to make someone who had nothing to do with something responsible, so I am sure NGC should be held responsible for damage to a coin caused by toning. Since PCGS does not give a star, they will not have to worry about the coins in their holders damaged by similar toning.

    I must be missing something here, this makes absolutely no sense (but that isn't surprising).

    wallstreetman, I think the same is true about all numerical grades on PCGS and NGC coins this just adds a slightly different twist to the grade review. mike

    Looking at how many pay for the PCGS plastic regardless of the coin, I am sure there are those that pay for the star regardless of the coin. Still haven't seen any point to your arguement. When people sell an $8 coin in a PCGS holder with wonderful toning for thousands, and the toning goes bad, what amount should PCGS be responsible for?

    Neither is NGC!
    Many (the majority?) of NGC's STAR coins are Proofs with 'barely-made-it-CAMS' that are spot/blemish free.
    They are also brilliant.

    NGC is "promoting" (even that term of yours is debatable) Eye Appeal.

    Of course, as long as the grading services are effective at keeping AT coins out of slabs, the chance of attractively toned coins "turning" in the slab is small.

    What if they said that spotted coin coin is appealing and nobody else thought so? How many NGC stars are given out for White coins? Im sorry, but I know what the star is for! Show me some pictures of White Coins with stars!

    (Hand raised) I can answer that!

    Out of the 14 (yeah, I just counted), eight of my NGC 'STAR' coins are brilliant WHITE baby! Blast White really, with tons of luster and NO specks/ spots/ haze/ tone/ or other issues that plague coins and take away from the STAR APPEAL! In fact, two of them also have the "W" on the insert!

    Now, I suppose NGC could all of a sudden bump their collective heads against a brick wall and forget what it is the Collectors demand out of Eye Appealing coins and begin to grade spotted coins as "STAR" coins, but if they did so they would also then need to change their name to, "NTC".

    So what do you think of all these TWISTS(darktones word)? I think the only thing some of these services are being consistant with is twisting things around! Should we allow this by buying into it?

    My next question is, Why would someone pay big bucks for a star if it is given out so easily, theres tons of coins with luster! I was under the impression that it was a big deal, only meant for Monster Toned Coins dripping with luster! Or am I wrong about the BIG BUCKS also? Im learning a few things here I didnt realize!

    You mean this thread has no merit image By your orginal words, I was sure you had bought, sold, submitted etc. at least hundreds of star coins.

    I only own one NGC coin, a 2001 $10 Platinum NGC MS70, and its for sale! Sorry, no star! Too bad its not PCGS!

    Im not hearing how wonderful the NGC star is! I will assume the star is now worthless, since finding it is given out so freely! So, how many of you got taken on a bunch of needless regrades? I bet NGC made some money though!

    I have never had a NGC star coin either, so I cannot comment. However, I have read many, many good comments about them, with none negative. Where is WSM coming from now? Oh, never mind. Never, never kool aide land.
