Is SEGS really that bad?

After reading another thread I had to look at my SEGS slab and ask if SEGS is really that bad.
Below is my 1844 Double Date Seated Quarter graded AU-53 by SEGS. In my opinion SEGS graded this piece too low, which is surprising to me considering this piece came directly from Larry Briggs private seated collection.
In Q. David Bowers "Buyers Guide to Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States", Mr. Bowers renders high accolades to Larry Briggs

What is your opinion, is the coin depicted below graded High, Low, or accurately?

It was Larry's personal coin, and would have been graded by him. The grade is correct. Larry is vice President of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, of which Dave Bowers is a member.

What ever happened to the talk of SEGS being sold?

IMO, SEGS is both bad and is *not* bad...

All services are "bad" in some way because grading can be as inconsistent as any human being can be...

All *reputable* services that try to give a legitimate grading opinion are "good" -- as far as grading opinions go.

With way too many series, you really should not do sight-unseen trading because of the unavoidable variability that goes into grading. As such, you should go with the services that offer a reasonable warranty to their opinions. If they say that that 09SVDB is genuine, then they better be prepared to put their money on the line.

A service that really tries to provide a credible service should not be afraid to put their own money on the line.

dealer don't care for segs but as a collector I like them. you can submit a coin and not have to pay the 25.00 pcgs or ncg ask. I know you can get pcgs cheaper by submitting yourself but with my grading skills its like a crap shot and I always get shot snake eyes without my dealers advice. I really like ICG and SEGS because of the reasonable prices.

    I like SEGS.
They've always been friendly with me on the phone- will grade "stuff" no one else will touch (now including PCI image ) and their holders are top notch.

I like PCGS and NGC better, but SEGS is okie-dookie in my book.

NoGvmnt, your coin looks cleaned to me, but does have AU details.

Regarding Briggs, he is a very talented numismatist. He knows virtually every series of us and a lot of foreign coins. He can attribute coins from memory, quite often. Lately, I have not been impressed by the grades put on the slabs, but as far as Larry's ability to grade, he is one of the best.

That is only because I didn't go through the pain-in-the-azz resetting routine to get the scan exactly right. The coin actually has a lot of lustre on it, especially on the reverse.

do not equate "segs" to "larry briggs". i've mentioned many times before, briggs is a remarkable numismatist, exceptionally talented. that doesn't mean those who work for him are.

I've slabbed with SEGS for a long time-an excellent service IMO.

I havent really looked at thier "product" in a while. When they first opened thier doors, the stuff I saw was very conservatively graded. Had a few 65's go 66 with PCGS.
Since then I've "heard" nothing but negative criticism.
