Proof Walking Liberty Halves: do they come in cameo?

Does anyone have a picture of a cameo proof Walking Liberty Half? Are cameos rare for all denominations from the 1940's?

Extremely rare. I think you can probably count the number of PCGS graded cameo Walkers on one hand.

oh, baby. you might be able to count the 1936-1942 CAM's of all denominations on both hands!! i've seen some one-sided coins, some weak or uneven two-sided coins and even a few CAM's offered, but never a DCAM. the most killer coin was a ???1937??? buffalo offered by R&I Coins a few years ago. my prediction is that there are some such coins held in older collections that will see a slab when they are sold by heirs. details at 11..........

You forget my icon coin -- a '42-P Jeff in PCGS 66DCAM which I am most proud of.

Cams from these years are indeed very tough to come by. Check out R&I Coins' photo archive if you would like to see some incredible cameo coins from this era, including the '37 Buff Al mentioned, and a really pretty '38 Walker. These coins are the cream of numismatic art!

hey barry

i plead somewhere between the fifth and ignorance about your icon.

maybe i should start paying attention to what they are instead of just who the member is. have you ever seen clankeye's? after close to a year, it took him posting about his love for BTW's and my buying one in auction before i realized his icon was the coins reverse. as the saying goes, the lights may be on, but that doesn't necessarily mean anybody's home!!

I love that City View dollar that Clankeye posts a picture of every now and then. Incredible detail and art for such an old coin. Almost enough to make me switch over to the other team. . . .

I saw a '37 Buffalo in a PR 67 Cameo holder. I thought there were two. I met a guy in an elevator and he showed the Buffalo to me. We were staying at the same hotel in Long Beach.

I think the PR 64 Walker I had before the one above was a little more frosted. The one above is not quite as frosted as it looks in the picture. Neither would make cameo. But you can find Walkers with a little frost.

I made an educational display for the FUN show on this topic last January. I displayed several proofs from this era, but none of mine are certified as cameo. I have a 1939 half that has a nice light cameo on the obverse, but the reverse is brilliant. That is not unusual for just the obverse to have some cameo. My 1940 Pf67 dime has light cameo on both sides but not enough to be called a cameo. The mint just did not acid etch or sandblast the proof dies in this era. Cameo silver proof coinage stopped in 1915 except for the few 1921 and 1922 Peace dollars. Proof coinage resumed in 1936 and it seems the techniques from before had been forgotten.

you ask some really intreging questions dan and since i have talked to you before and you were a gentleman to me i got some really intreging answers for you as this has been one of my specialities 24/7 the last 25 years or so

my speciality are cameo/deep cameo proofs from 1936 to 1942 and pre 1915 i have been specializing in this type of thing for over 25 years when many thought i was crazy and totally out of my mind and when most could know or care about this subject or knew or understood what i was talking about

i am the one who made the pcgs proof 67 cameo 1938 walker in dec 2001 the first cameo ever gradeed by pcgs and still the finest walker by pcgs in 67 cameo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, solid 67 and solid cameo obverse

i also made the proof 67 deep cameo pcgs 1901 lib nick at pcgs in may 2002 the first and finest lib nick graded in 67 deep cameo at pcgs and is a total monsta easily a high end deep cameo lib nick! also undergraded by one point

and this is just among many such coins the list goes on and on multiple pop one coins with none higher and real coins also not wannabes
