Popular California quarter

I think the California quarter will revitalize the State Quarter Program.

A drawing of a Gold Rush miner, a redwood tree and a bear is shown during a news conference at the Capitol in Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday, March 11, 2003. The design was the most popular design voted on by Californians who participated in an Internet poll on what the state's commemorative quarter should look like. (AP Photo/State of California)

"A Golden Moment" -- is that anything like a Kodak moment? Give me a break. Its so commercial and corny it makes my skin crawl. And what is that thing sticking up behind the bear? A dead tree trunk? What does that symbolize? The future of Calfiornia's forests?

Another ugly StateQ, is the decision final?

I like that design more than most I've seen. I hated our state's. TN. One of the other finalists was much nicer than the final design.

Look at the other great choices we had. I can't believe #11 got so many votes. If that becomes the quarter, I may move in shame.image

You've got to be kidding, that is a great quarter! No Hollywood, no homosexuals, just the best parts of the state. I think that was clearly the best design of all the designs that we got to vote upon.

#3 and #7 also look nice. I think the CA design looks great. My heart is still in the Old North State but thier design had to be the worse yet. Couldn't even get the moto right.image

while i appreciate the intent - that coin is WAY too busy.

as calgold pointed out - what is that thing? and i'm assuming those are flowers in the foreground. if there wasn't already too much going on there they had to add that big stupid looking sparkle in the pan (or at least i think that's what it is).

a coin should have 1 central symbolic design. unfortunately every element in that design is probably protected by a different political action committee.

I think it looks pretty good and should look nice in a 69dcam... one though, shouldn't that bear be tearing that paner tno shreds with it claws and be ripping his intestines out with the sharp, large teeth? image

It's OK. It could have been a lot worse (#20, for example). I'm not pleased with the "A Golden Moment" phrase -- sounds like something I have in the bathroom every morning. I would have preferred a simple "Eureka" in its place.

I think it is a nice design and better than most that I have seen. I live in Michigan and we are going to have a map of the great lakes. Boring. Like everyone doesn't already know what Michigan looks like.

I think we have a new record for most items squeezed into a quarter. A miner, flowers, trees, a bird, mountains, a bear, and an asparagus! Woah! Congatulations California! image

And as long as we are going to put non-existent objects like a California Grizzly on there, why not have a Sasquatch?

If you think this initial design is bad, just wait until the mint bureaucrats and engravers finish re-vamping it. To begin with, the environmentalist activists will be consulted on whether there is anything threatening or demeaning to animals and trees, not to mention the depiction of outright exploitation of natural resources as represented by the prospector, obviously a travesty of wilderness spoilage because of greed. Just watch, folks...it'll happen!

Actually, it isn't a done deal. The top five vote getters ( #1, #2,#3, #11, and #17) will be considered by the governor to be sent to the mint as suggestions. The mint gets the final say. I kind of like #11 myself. Different, and would make an awesome coin!

The quarter is excessively cluttered. All we need are some old license plates, a rubber boot,

a kitchen sink and some fish. I would leave the wonderful bear and redesign the rest.OK,

leave some fish, the bear might be hungry. No I did not pose for the bear, Im cuter.

I think the California quarter should have no design on the reverse, just the words "Property of Gov. Gray Davis".

Clearly, Californians have chosen the images and themes they feel most prominantly represent their state:

    * The miner panning for gold represents greed, as does the whole gold rush movement which the image alludes to.

    * The bear in the water represents their economy.

    * "A Golden Moment" clearly is a reference to the shady porn industry which thrives in California.

    * The trees, mountains, bird, and waterfall in the background show that preserving nature clearly takes a backseat to their interests represented by the miner and the motto.

    * The overall design shows that the state has no central focus and the fact that there is nothing truely symbolic of the state such as a reference to Hollywood, or the Golden Gate Bridge or their great beaches/coastline or even the correct dang state motto or a gazillion other things that could be there shows that they just don't friggin care and they think the whole quarter thing is a big joke and they have no pride in their state.

The only thing funnier than this design will be the Florida design, when they have to count the votes fifteen times and take it to court to see if the people voted on the design with all the old people sunbathing, or the hurricane image, or the hanging chads design.

Them's fightin' words, Robertpr! As a matter of fact we just finished voting on our quarter without incident so....nya! Just wish had had as many choices as California.

Oh, and I actually like Cali's. Thank god #6 didn't win.

As California is my adopted state I have a vested interest in this quarter - it has to be better than New York's (my previous state)!

I think the top vote getter is so so. The design is a bit busy, but certainly better than any of the designs with an outline of the state, anything to do with Hollywood, or the hideous marching guy/lady (number 12).

I voted for number 11, the sun and waves: Uncluttered and kind of cool. I guess there's no middle ground on that one, you either llove it or oyou hate it!

While I'm not too crazy about this design, it was the gold rush, not the Golden Gate bridge, not Hollywood or the porn industry, that got California it's statehood. The Grizzly is on our state flag, the Golden Poppy is our state flower, this design is symbolic to a fault of my beloved state. (Too busy, and A Golden Moment is a tad corny!) But sadly, still better than most designs.

Maybe the though behind it was good, but it's way too busy. I like the looks of the 1925-S California Diamond Jubilee coin MUCH more. As they say in California, KISSS (Keep It Simple, Silly Savages).

You have to picture it minted. It should look nicer on the reflective surfaces. It should also turn out a lot of errors if it's minted as shown. I don't understand the "A Golden Moment" thing. Is the prospector going to pee on the bear? Or vice versa? There is quite a bit of that in California with all the adult movie businesses. We're lucky a design didn't get submitted with Jenna Jamison and Ron Jeremy on it. Oh wait, that IS Ron Jeremy walking through the water!
    I have icon envy.
