Question on a 1803 large cent

I don't know the different varieties but this one has a really neat cud below the date, does that make it more valuable

S-253: a R-2 variety.

opps, my mistake - it's a S-263, a R-3 variety. Sorry.

It most likely is 1803 small date and fraction. (Breen#-1753 Sheldon#-263) In which case most of them have that die impurity.

Is a R-3 a "common" large cent or is it worth more than the prices they list in Grey sheet?

It's common; especially in this grade.

With the exception of some popular varieties, there usually isn't much if any premium until at least R-4+.
