Coins damaged by grading service

Other than fingerprints and cookie crumbs, has anyone ever had a coin seriously damaged by a grading service? I was recently cracking a slab and put a big scratch into the coin...oops...fortunately nothing expensive, but just the same, I wonder how often this happens to coins people have submitted? Has anyone ever gotten a coin back damaged, or had a grading service call to say,"Uhhh...we sort of dropped your coin, and then David H. was walking by and stepped on it...." Just curious.

  • I sent in a nice modern FS nickel that i was expecting ms66 and it came back ms64 with a big scratch in the field. Now i'm not the greatest grader but i would'nt have sent it in with a scratch on it in the first place so i know it was not on it when it left. Not an expensive coin and hard to prove who is at fault but i think it was damaged while grading, hence the low grade instead of being scratched when it was slabbed. Only bad experience out of 100+ submissions to PCGS. image

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

....inflation must be kicking in again this dollar says spend by Dec. 31 2004!
