  The S-mintmark used in the 1950s was introduced in 1946 and used through the last business strike production at SF in 1955. The same S was used when proof production started at SF in 1968 and was used through 1979. This S is know as the 1979 Type 1 mintmark. The depth at which it was punched into the die will affect the thickness. The deeper it is punched in, the thicker it will appear.
