Has coin collecting become too wide open?

It used to be that coin collecting was similiar to diamond trading... somwhat secretive and performed witha handshake and a promise to pay and a promise to deliver. This was probably more true on the high end stuff.

Now the busieness seems to be more like McDonalds or Walmart. Has the mint spurred this on with the introduction of more commemoratives and modern collectibles? Is this good for the hobby or does it water it down?

I think it's good for the hobby. A low barrier to entry always allows scam artists and such to prey upon people, but it also opens the door to more people. And more people generates money and a market for coins (better for the collector and dealer). And it also stimulates the market to produce literature, videos, and TV shows on the hobby. All of those are good things.
