A very nice coin with well defined bell lines and well preserved bust. I can't tell if I see some light circulation wear on the bust and on the tressel of the bell. These are the first places where you tend to see wear on lightly circulated Franklins. Also I see an unfortunate ding on the upper bell lines. The skin on the coin is nice and original and I love that look on Franklins. Let us know what what the surface condition is on this coin!
With wear - AU58 No wear - MS64FBL (due to the hit on the bell line)
Thanks for the clarification Ken - very nice coin. If it werent for the bell dings (the rub spot on the the right side of the bell also) and the slight roughness on the face of the bust I'd even call it a push 65FBL. Unfortunately it takes very little to send Frankies into 64FBL land (which is still a very respectable grade in my mind!) Definitely a keeper! - Let's see what Lucille has to say on the matter when she comes around.
The thing that really gets me on these babies is grading them before buying them. They actually look better when I get them home and photograph them. I've only been buying for 2 weeks. I'll learn, though!! Ken
Below is what I would call a "typical" MS64FBL. Note the chatter on the bust and the bell and compare that to your coin. I think you'll understand why Franklins in high grades are so hard to come by - they just have too much open spaces where ding's can't hide.
Ken- I'll give the coin a MS-64 grade. I'm not able to see the entire length of the bell lines, so I can't say if it makes FBL. What I can see of the bell lines, they appear very bold. I agree with Frank regarding the attractive skin. Nice coin. Congratulations!
I agree with typetone on the 65FBL. The fields are too clean to merit a 64 and the large ding on the lower left of the bell shouldn't push it below 65 due to the clean overall surfaces of the entire coin. Nice find and you should submit it and let us know how it grades!
And I disagree, that very large hit on the Bell lines will keep this one out of a 65 holder. I have 65's and 66's with dings, none that large. I think it is to distracting for this coin to go a 5.

Nice looking coin. Based on the pic, (I always caveat my comments that we are grading pictures and not coins) I would keep it out of 65 based on the chatter on the cheek, mark on the chin, and what I think are a couple of small scratches in the right obverse field. 64FBL
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
IMO, that coin is far nicer than a 63, not quite a 65, predict pcgs will give it MS-64FBL, and it will be a slightly to very PQ coin in that holder, looks like 64.6 to me, with original surfaces. nice coin! ($5?!?)

Hey Lucy - look - the grandmaster of Franklins agreed with me!
Wonder if the grandmaster as you put it, I'm not convinced of this, would have agreed with you when you called that obvious au Frankie a surefire ms66? I have that coin in my hands, and I would be lucky to get a au58, though it still is a nice coin. Lets see, you were only 8-10 points off on the grade....

dcamfrank, I am refering to another coin that FC57 and a few others would know what I am talking about.... Another coin that really did look high end due to the photo and toning, but a close examination showed that it wasn't, and the person I got the coin from was very honest and upfront about it..... your jumping to conclusions again and your wrong.

Gee Lucille, how silly that I would expect you to address the topic of the thread. Everyone else to post to this thread have discussed the 1954 Franklin posted by Ksteelheader. You are the ONLY Memeber posting to this thread to refer to some other coin, in a very incoherent fashion, I might add. I've not jumped to any conclusion and I certainly wasn't wrong.
Perhaps you should consider staying on topic. I know it is hard for you to have others disagree with your grades. You just need to let it go.

Well Lucille, Ken Reichert, ksteelheader, is in Abbottstown, PA. He says in an earlier post that the coin is on its way to PCGS tomorrow morning.
If you are at home in New Mexico, then how do you have the coin in your hands now??
Frank never claimed the coin was a MS-66. He said a MS-64FBL, if there is no wear. He said a AU-58 if there was wear.
Your grade of MS-63 is still the low grade.
