***Assigned grade revealed in first post*** Newp GTG Peace dollar ANACS Soapbox

I personally find Peace dollars difficult to grade and I suspect this one may be challenging for some here. It’s a newp from GC, in an ANACS soapbox holder… looking forward to your opinions & grading thoughts. I’ll post the answer tomorrow morning…

It was given a grade of 64… congrats to all those who had correct guesses.

I think it’s a 65 based on the lack of distracting marks and cartwheel luster in-hand.

I’ll be leaving it in the ANACS holder.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

    In a soapbox, I'd guess MS64. Probably a 65 today.

Yeah, I was surprised by that. Did not look Phil Arnold quality so I checked GC. I think OP’s image got compressed and lost quality somehow. Here’s the original:

Thank you @P0CKETCHANGE , I think the compression happened when I edited out the cert number.

Even with the marks on the neck, that looks like a solid 65.

Looks like an easy 64 but could be a 65. Not the best photo to accurately grade how minor that chatter is on the cheek.

I think its between 64-65 so I will guess 64+.
I really like how frosty peace dollars come and this is no exception.

I agree about the photos, and that leads to a dilemma, when guessing grades. Do you base the guess on what you see? Or do you try to guess how far off the photo is and guess the grade, taking your guess about the photo into account? 🤔

Interpret the photograph and adjust accordingly. Taking coin photos at face value is a sure way to get into trouble, not only with GTGs, but also buying coins online.

Agree with that dilemma, along with, are we supposed to be giving our personal grade opinion, or truly trying to guess the grade given by the TPG?

Agreed, in particular, with respect to buying coins.
That said, I think the best part of guess-the-grade threads can be helping each other with grading information and tips. While fun, either way, for purposes of learning, guessing the grade correctly isn’t important, when compared to the understanding and reasoning that goes into the guess.

Someone can guess a grade “correctly”, but actually made a bad guess, based on the images that were posted. On the other hand, someone can guess a grade “incorrectly”, but actually made a good guess, based on the images.

If it’s a guess-the-grade thread, I take it to mean guess the assigned grade. So that’s what I do, though sometimes I include my own grade opinion, as well.

Adding a little context and reasoning with a guess should definitely be encouraged, as you did in your comment above (“Even with the marks on the neck”). A small comment like that is educational, or at minimum, adds clarity.

Superb collections are built more by omission than by addition.

Thank you for the clarification re: assigned grade vs. opinion.

The grade is revealed in the first post.

There are still some nice coins to be found in soapbox holders…

I understand why you guessed what you did but this is Phil Arnold (original True View photographer) style photography. The photo here was a bit of a glamour shot much like the recent 1936-D quarter thread. My experience is that you have to blow up the photos and essentially assume the worst about every tick you see.

    I guessed 64+ LOL.
Its in a soapbox so its not possible. Sorry I forgot when writing my guess.
I do think it would grade at least 64+ if you were to cross it.
I do think leaving it in the current holder is the way to go though.

And you were correct. 👍 Multiple additional flaws are apparent in the slab shot.

Yes! I prefer the soapbox holders over all others and for a time, only collected dollar coins in those holders. Sadly, there are few of them available in the wild...

    Thank you, same!

And I love the frost on the eagle. This coin is very original and whether its a 64, 64+ or 65 really makes little difference to me.
