1971 Mint Set. Error or Damaged?

USSID18USSID18 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm in the damaged column. Surprisingly, I just noticed someone wrote "25 cent error" on the envelope before I acquired it. Do you have any idea where;.. from the minting process to packaging this could have happened?

Yes but the question is: How, where and when?

Probably damaged by the gizmo that cuts the Mint Sets apart after the ribbed steel rollers have squeezed the plastic together around the coins. When I visited the Denver Mint's Mint Set packaging department in 1981 there were two people cutting apart flawed sets and stacking up the salvaged coins to go back into the machine. This coin should not have been put back into the machine.

I agree with Tom, I have seen a few similar errors in Mint sets, along with many with a waffle pattern embossed into the rim from getting caught in the heat sealer that forms the individual cells in the plastic sets.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

I have seen a few of these before so this certainly makes sense.
