You spent how much for your 1909-D PCGS MS65 CAC? I imagine the price record is on Heritage's auction site but I never visit this site since I'm not an auction fan but disclosing how much you did pay might be useful info for readers here.

    $1,275

Not bad. Not bad at all. B)

I'm very happy with this CAC bought last year. Guess the grade and how much I paid for it.

Not Unc imo. A little wear is evident. AU55? $500? Let's hear some more guesses.

    Your grading was too harsche.

I am having difficulty making my photo app work so will not be doing GTG on my 1908-O dime at this time.

Were you hoping to post one of these? :)

I was but I must say yours is nicer. Do you have a set of Barber dimes going? I'm doing One-A-Year (OAY) on these. My OAY 1908 is a 1908-O, PCGS AU55 CAC. The '0' and the '8' numerals in the date pop out on your piece as they do on mine.

Yes, I can be very stringent grader. Some might say too stringent. I was expecting to see a more full strike on DisneyFan's 1909-D for PCGS to call it gem uncirculated. I didn't guess uncirculated of course but if I had I would have said choice uncirculated or MS63.

My reference for Barber dimes is David Lawrence's guide. I ordered it from Mr. Lawrence himself in 1991.

Can't have too many reference books. :)

Lawrence says this about grading mint state Barber dimes:

"Toning subdues luster and can hide friction. Such coins are difficult to grade and sometimes fool professionals. Relying on third party grading is recommended for coins grading MS 63 and higher and for lower grade uncirculated coins when there is a large price difference between grades."

1909-D is an intriguing date with that big, bold 'D' mintmark. During my metal detecting days in Denver, Colorado, I found '06-D, '07-D, '08-D, and '10-D dimes but not '09-D. I think I'm going to try and find a nice '09-D to buy for my OAY set UNLESS I locate a choice, XF or better, '09-S to buy first. :)

It is a great book for those who want to learn about the strike, luster, surfaces, toning and eye appeal of each of the 74 business strike and 24 proof Barber Dimes. Goes into wonderful detail about each coin. It's just like siting across from an expert coin dealer and being guided through the world of Barber Dimes. Could have used color pictures, though.

The Denver mint Barber dimes are pretty much undervalued in today's market place.

My feeling is they were undervalued back in the day as well. I buy them whenever I see them in VF or better condition given that the price is right (meaning: I'm seeing some value for my money). You have a $2000+ coin that you paid $1275 for so are well-positioned to make a profit, if you choose to sell, down the line. $1275 for PCGS MS 65 CAC 1909-D dime seems to be a steal. 2027 Red Book lists at $875 for MS 63. 1907-D in nice uncirculated condition is not to be sneered at either. $750 in MS 63? :o

    '07-D & '09-D, the "Big 2" of the "Big 'D'" dimes.

Speaking of finding Denver mint dimes in the ground, the reader might have the question, "Did you ever find '16-D Merc.?" I never did find one of these hunting for coins mainly in Denver's historic City Park but I know someone who did. The finder of the '16-D was in the park same day as me. It was early Spring 1975 as I recall. He came rushing up to me wild-eyed, exclaiming, "Look what I just found!" There it was in his hand dirt still clinging to it, a 1916-D Mercury dime with circulation wear but not very much. Extra fine condition when lost, I surmised, and most probably lost some time in the 1920s. My research showed that the area mr lucky and I worked most heavily had carnivals operating there about that time so there was lots of opportunity for carnival goers to lose their money to the ground. It was the most productive area in terms of finds with my metal detector that I ever had.

mr lucky, finder of '16-D Merc told me he took his coin to a local coin shop and received an "insulting" offer of only $100 for it. I think he was expecting an offer of more like $500 for his '16-D.
