Which 'statement' note would you own?

ajaanajaan Posts: 18,066 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have no US banknotes in my collection. If you were to buy just one note to have in your collection, price ~$1000, which note would you choose? I'm thinking a colorful/historic note.

In the process of deciding, you may want to think about the condition of the note that might interest you. I write this mainly because earlier large notes in a higher grade can go for $$$. I was going suggest an 1896 $1 Education note, but even these have become quite pricey in EF. Another possibility might be a Large National from a Bank from a town that is important to you. There are some that are still quite affordable in a high grade. Good luck with the search. You just might find the perfect note when you least expect it.

Being an ex teacher, the Education note interests me. Are these known to be counterfeited? I looked on eBay and the prices seem to be all over the place.

Don't know if they were counterfeited. Condition is a huge factor

I just took a quick look on Ebay... prices are driven/dictated by condition, and it looks as if prices have escalated

I love the 1896 $1 Education note. I was fortunate to snag a VF30 EPQ specimen for just over $1000.

Another note that you might consider is the 1899 $5 Indian Chief / Oncpapa note. A nice example will cost more than $1000, but not a whole lot more.

Please excuse my ignorance, what is EPQ?

No problem! "EPQ" is a designation that the PMG grading company gives to some high quality notes, and it means "Exceptional Paper Quality".

Our host, PCGS, has a very similar designation "PPQ" which means "Premium Paper Quality". Here's the PCGS web page explaining how they determine whether or not a note gets a PPQ designation:
