eBay search options no longer have TPGs?

Russell12Russell12 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have about 25 saved searches in eBay, all for PCVGS slabbed coins. As of yesterday, they stopped only showing PCGS and are showing all coins, raw and all TPGs. I tried to redo the searches, but the TPG option is gone. Anyone else have this issue?

Same. It’s hit or miss. Sometimes it will show up. We are now expected to use the buttons on top for popular searches or type the specific grade and tpg into the search bar.

You could free type in the search using the syntax below:

(services separated by commas) & (coin search terms separated by commas)

For example, this will bring up all Morgan and Peace Dollars for NGC, PCGS, and CACG:

(PCGS, NGC, CACG) & (Morgan, Peace)

I've noticed that too. Makes searching for the PCGS coins that I want/need much more difficult and time consuming.

Just add it to the search string.

The feature I really miss is the date range option from many, many years ago. Now to search for a coin from say the 1930s, I have to type out (1930, 1931,1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939). It is annoying and unnecessary. It will also help generalists like me to use broad search terms with a hard cut-off (e.g. 1950).

Same here, and it's quite frustrating.

Most searches are like that...hit or miss. You could type in something super specific and garbage shows up completely unrelated.

While I greatly dislike eBay, based on recent posts, I got back on the site and did a few test drives. Regarding the search capability specifically, I think it's pretty awful.

Some searches returned absurd results, far outside of the coins I tried to find. Like, auto parts, jello molds and other ridiculous items would show up. Worse yet, some searches seemed to intentionally remove me from whatever coin category I was in and plop me in the middle of some utterly unrelated random category (garden tools??)

So for now, eBay remains off of my list of frequent destinations on the internet.

I messaged them and a rep reached out to me. I complained and suggested they reverse the changes to coins and to not implement with currency. We'll see what happens.

If common sense is so common, why is it so uncommon?

I just copy and paste all my search words every time I go to search eBay.....been doing this for years! I have no difficulties entering my info. I'm not retyping everything every time I go there.
What I do find annoying, whenever I click on a listing and choose to not buy or bid, that same listing will follow me to the next page I search through. It's like they have the site rigged to make me take a second look at the same listing/coin I rejected earlier. I've already looked at the coin, decided I don't want it but it keeps following me to every next page of listings I go to.....very annoying! When I reach the 20th or 21st page of listings, I've already seen half of them....very annoying!

I noticed the change a while back but since all my Saved Searches remained, it did not impact me. Until today- now all my Saved Searches are worthless.

I submitted feedback to eBay. I also added comments to existing eBay community discussions (which can be found by doing a Google Search).

    My feedback was:

"As others have stated, it is imperative to be able to seach by Grading Company (i.e. PCGS, NGC, CAC) and by specific grade (i.e. XF40, XF45, AU50). For example, if I collect Buffalo Nickels graded by PCGS in grades XF40, XF45, AU50, I am not interested in scrolling through dozens or hundreds of other coins to find what I collect."

FYI - I was able to get in contact with someone at eBay who is responsible for the coin category. I sent them a long write up of the issue with screenshots. Hopefully, they will see that this change is problematic and revert it back next week.

They just want you to look at all the coins THEY want you to see and make it imposable to find what you're looking for

This is very true. Recently over 4 day period been looking at French 10 Centimes. Despite the non keywords suggestions continued my search until felt had seen it all. Picked up what felt was best option and after checkout was given the you may also like results with two better and much cheaper options never presented prior. Looked at both and there was nothing in listings that would have prevented them as being a searchable result.

eBay has always been a tricky entity and they continue to become better at directed self interests.

Searching for the French 10 Centimes I had to look through Francs, coins from Switzerland, Belgium, French Flags, soccer jerseys, Euros… so much irrelevance.

Typically I would have given up and not bought anything, however eBay understands their business model and the majority of people expand their interest and click to buy the suggestions.

I have another whiny complaint that isn't about the eBay site directly. Rather, doing searches in google, duckduckgo, dogpile or whatever seem to be polluted with what I assume are ancient eBay listings that no longer exist. Is it because of sold coins that eventually get deleted from history?

Yes, my understanding is eBay removes old listings (3+ months old), likely to reduce legal liability.

If it is difficult to search for the coins you want, it will also be difficult to find buyers for the coins you list for sale. I've been watching the search feature go down hill for several years now and I have been an active ebay buyer and seller since 1998.

Ebay removed the filter to sort by grade too. Now, you have to sort through hundreds of slop coins to try and find a select grade and certification.

Not a great solution. Say I want to search for AU50 or better, that's is a lot of grades to put into the search parameters.

It's not that much harder than clicking the equivalent number of boxes.

And the filters are dependent on the pre- filled item specifics. So, if the seller checks the wrong box, you won't find it.

So, while not a perfect solution, it's not much worse than clicking the filters.

Don't hold your breath, nothing will happen because THEY don't think anything is wrong.
Their main focus is to get you to look at as many coins as they can, they really don't care if you struggle to find what you're looking for, more pages to look through. For them it's a win win

For me, I am on ebay less and less. It's a safe haven for scammers. New listers pop up daily listing coins for absurd prices that are little more than pocket change. Ebay does absolutely nothing about. Some of the sellers use AI to come up with fictitious "errors". Dateless Buffalos listed for thousands of dollars, modern Washington quarters listed as rare when nearly a billion were minted. The list goes on and on and ebay does nothing about it.

    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

If somebody listed a coin for an absurdly low price, it would be bought as soon as it was recognized. The buyer would probably look at the seller's other listings for items similarly priced. And if the buyer was a poster here, he'd start a thread about it and everybody else would respond with "You suck." There are only complaints about pricing when sellers price things higher than buyers want to pay.

There's no way to stop sellers from pricing their coins however they like unless eBay approves the price of everything before it goes on the website. Does anybody think that has even the remotest possibility of working? I bet there isn't anybody here who's never been in a coin shop or at a coin show, where they thought nothing was overpriced.

This seems like too reasonable of a response for me to agree with. 😀

Last year at our local show, there was an old timer at a table with a single box of coins. Everything in the box was overgraded or misidentified (business strike Buff labeled a proof). I don't think he was a scammer, just ignorant. But no one threw him out of the show, they just didn't buy from him.

The real problem here is that there are complaints because eBay won't screen the coins on the website ahead of time and only show buyers things they want to buy. And they want eBay to know what those things are without being told.

In the "absurd price" situation, all you have to do is include a price range in a search to eliminate the outliers. I's not hard.

I've made many nice purhcases on eBay. Some from well established dealers. Others from just random individuals or less established dealers. Very rarely do I experiene a problem.

My issue is with how eBay continues to "fix" what is not broken. Just like a couple of months ago, they eliminated the date/time stamp for listings. After multiple complaints, they added it back. Now we are dealing with not being able to sort by Grading Company or Grade. Sure there are work-arounds, but why default to that?
