There must be an organized sportscard/pokemon theft ring operating in SoCal. There have been a lot of hobby stores robbed over the past year and a few strong armed robberies of individuals. I stopped bringing my high end stuff to shows for trade night for fear of being followed.

You are right. There have been several around LA alone including shops burglarized.
I guess that shows how the Pokemon craze is taking over the entire card industry. I don't know a thing about it but people seem to love them.

Yup, I think the actual target are the Pokemon cards. Most of the robberies seem to be Pokemon focused.
I just saw a video on Facebook talking about a guy that had about 170 cards on the truck that was robbed. The video showed email messages between him and PSA about the insurance value. PSA told him the value of his cards including grading fees and shipping was around $4200. He responded that he paid almost $5000 to PSA for grading and shipping. A lot of people are going to be screwed over this.
@PaulMaul said:
Nice of the article to give the street address of PSA’s shipping hub.🙄
its actually on the sub forms, so its not much of a secret.
The article had a comment about insured values on FedEx boxes. That may not have mattered in this case since it looks like it was targeted. However, I had four figure insurance on an FedEx package once and the clerk said "Wow what do you have in here?"

it's probably not unusual for a truck to be left alone for a while in an area with big/multiple deliveries happening at big buildings.
Aren't the most valuable cards short print/numbered? If so, how does someone actually resell those? Won't PSA have photos of the cards and know if they come back on the market somewhere cracked out of the holder?

Several variables there, I suppose, but anything serial numbered on the card itself would be easier to trace, if it resurfaced in an auction or elsewhere. I don't think there's a method to prove where a raw card came from if it's been cracked back out of the holder. The red hot raw card market is a perfect invitation for the potential release of stolen cards back into the wild.

Craig44 - thats why I dont use fedex insurance anymore. So my marbles are swinging out there with every shipment to PSA. I have also heard from inside FedEx that a high insurance value will place a big fat target on your package. I dont know if this is true for USPS or UPS but it wouldnt surprise me.
For the most part I dont think these are inside jobs by FEDEX employees. The drivers make good money and I dont think they would jeopardize their livelihood for a piece of encased cardboard. HOWEVER FEDEX uses a lot of contract services for Ground and Home Delivery. Those trucks and uniforms may have Fedex on them but they are contracted drivers. I could see an inside job with that crew since their comp is much less than a FTE.

Some people simply cannot stop themselves. Their minds (red and blue) are polluted with political nonsense and rhetoric.
So local news (ABC) covered this story today, complete with pictures of the building, the address number, the parking lot in the back, trucks, and an interview with a Pokemon dealer who lost cards after waiting since April.
While I did not fully read the theft article here are Just a few observations based on your comments.
1.) "looks like pokemon cards were targeted"... If this idea was just obtained from the percentage of packages that were pokemon cards then since PSA grades more pokemon than sports cards then all trucks robbed would "look like" Pokemon cards were targeted. Maybe someone asked the robbers what they were after
2.) Now would the robbers be likely to sell them all themselves or in small quantities. What avenues would the robbers use to sell them?? As some of you some mentioned seems with PSA serial numbers and uniqueness of each card that anyone trying to sell them on the open market would likely get caught if someone were monitoring them..
"According to the police, the FedEx driver left the vehicle, which was parked near PSA’s shipping and receiving address, located at 1610 E. St. Andrew Place, for between 60 and 90 minutes. The lock to the truck was broken and packages were stolen while he was away."
Certainly plausible with the shipping entity involved but it also would not take much recon to do with out knowing anyone on inside.
The safest solution for the cards is to go back to the old days and only utilize USPS REGISTERED. But that wont happen as Cohen et al, own piles of fedex stock so eff the customers then offer them .10-.20 on the dollar when stuff is stolen...

yeah, it is stressful. I can certainly understand how a big insurance value would put a huge bullseye on a package. especially a smaller sized one. I dont use FedEx anymore as i had a couple of bad experiences. lately i try to get big cards to the destination as fast as humanly possible. I have had good luck so far with UPS overnight.
I sent a card i just sold for $8k out monday afternoon UPS overnight. It traveled from Maine and arrived in Santa Ana at 10:37AM local time. UPS had it in their possession for a grand total of 17 hours and 28 minutes, going the entire length of the country.
pretty fast, but i was still obsessively hitting refresh until i got that delivery confirmation.
I have also used USPS Registered mail with success in the past. it is just very very very slow
I worked in that industry for years and still do to some degree. No way a Fedex truck is being “parked” for 90 minutes. If you were parked for more than 13 minutes it sent a single to the supers and they were on the phone. There is no chance on Earth that they don’t know who and what PSA does. This screams inside job.
There have been a couple reports stating that there were 2 pallets stolen and parts of a 3rd. Since the investigation is ongoing it's not possible to get the Santa Ana police report so trust what you want from the limited information so far but that seems odd to me. If it's P&D *The Vans) that must be a scheduled pickup and that is the same driver/ same route or same driver(s) / same route(s) if they have multiple pickups per day.
I am anxious to understand this one better. It could be an inside job or coerced but that's so obvious that it seems like it shouldn't be true. FedEx and all the major shippers support options for high-value transport. team driver, secured trailer, no unattended stops rule. If my cards were on there I would be talking to an attorney about a negligence case. I expect to see a class action for this - I don't think PSA's FMV calculator works.
The stolen cards will be cracked out eliminating any tracking provided by a certification number. Then, either sold raw or submitted to a third party grading company to be encapsulated again. The more likely scenario is the stolen cards will be sold raw.

I just recently watched the goodfellas movie. This truck heist reminds me of the driver who gave up the truck keys willingly to the mob and then goes into the diner and announces the theft of his truck but the obvious wrong descriptions of the suspects. Classic.

What happens down the road when someone at a card show buys one of these stolen cards - presumably raw because it was removed from the PSA holder? Then later it's found out that it was a previously stolen card?
@DotStore said:

If there’s valid proof, the item in question could be handed over to the proper authorities. Chances of that happening are between ultra slim and none.
it's probably not unusual for a truck to be left alone for a while in an area with big/multiple deliveries happening at big buildings.
If the packages were on pallets, then that means it was a box truck, which would not be full of "smaller" deliveries to a large buildings where it could sit for an hour.
Plus, it is an all-industrial area, so you'd drive the vehicle to each drop-off.....
If they had multiple pickups, which is uncommon - but so are box trucks for P&D, it’s possible the truck was parked while the driver waited for the next pickup time. I really hope PSA has a dedicated service route though.
The article says that PSA deactivated the certs. I think that sounds counterproductive. Deactivated certs cannot be added to a registry inventory. If the cert is active, and someone with a registered PSA account goes to add the card to their inventory online, then you have found where the card is/was. Sure, some innocent people may buy them not knowing they were stolen, but the trail can be followed. If I had an order on that truck, I would not want them to deactivate my certs.
There's serious issues above and beyond a person being on property with the ability to get pallets off a truck unimpeded or questioned. Or another driver leaving his box truck unattended with product of ours inside. Many a bombing has started with unattended shipping trucks

Everyone in a building holds the same responsibility to work with rules designed to insure their work environment is free and safe from hazards that can affect their safety. How would I explain to say the secretary/ security/ staff at the front entrance they are safe now??

This incident violates the OSHA General Duty Clause to work in a safe environent. I'd be after blood as a manager. Who violated our protocols? Did we address why an unattended Fedex vehicle was on property , and did we have it and / or that driver under surveillance ? Did he just park and leave ? A million questions for every staff member who was in that building that day. Who knew what, who addressed what, etc, etc etc.

Heres an example of the claims process I had to endure when they damaged a rare card. Card on ebay I bought for 40. Saved my receipt. Card is from an insert set and only 25 produced. They dont grow on trees and only appear every 3-4 years. Sent in to PSA back when grading modern was $10.99. Put my declared at 60. Cost me $51 plus my shipping fees to / from
>

They offered me 40 based on the eBay reciept. I had to negotiate the final accepted claim, which I asked to be a grading voucher / credir on account . But they were professional, nice , and sent some stuff that took the sting of the damage off. Still hurt like hell to have a card I waited years to find be damaged. Took 4 more years to locate the replacement

Still hurts, but I can say they were just doing their jobs professionally.

I have tons of claims process experience recouping money from shippers. Done correctly, the shipping companies claims process people will process the approvals fast. Done wrong , missing info, failure to pay extra for declared values etc and they will deny any part not covered. Fedex frankly is the WORST shipping company. Used to be good. UPS is better IF and only if you follow proper packing measures. DHL is decent. USPS is best again IF and only if proper measures are taken. And unlike others its a Federal crime if people steal from them. Not wrist slapping misdameanor charges worth the theft

If the packages were on pallets, then that means it was a box truck, which would not be full of "smaller" deliveries to a large buildings where it could sit for an hour.
Plus, it is an all-industrial area, so you'd drive the vehicle to each drop-off.....
Maybe the driver had a "nooner" nearby!
Been there, done that as recently as last week.

I would rather just take his word for it.
There's serious issues above and beyond a person being on property with the ability to get pallets off a truck unimpeded or questioned. Or another driver leaving his box truck unattended with product of ours inside. Many a bombing has started with unattended shipping trucks

I see a complete lack of an entire buildings interior and exterior oversight

My concerns would be all safe working environment related. Addressing those can fix the missing property issues for the future
