For those who sell on eBay, there is an update to payouts starting November 4th 2026

U1chicagoU1chicago Posts: 7,042 ✭✭✭✭✭

For those that sell on eBay, there are some changes coming November 4th for payouts.
The main point is below-basically any automatic payments will default to on demand. So if you want to keep getting automatic transfers to your account, you will need to change your settings. Otherwise the balance will stay with eBay until you manually request a payout.

The relevant blurb along with other details in the link:

Payouts will be on-demand by default, meaning your earnings will stay in your balance until you use or withdraw them. You can request a withdrawal of your balance at any time.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/getting-paid/getting-paid-items-youve-sold?id=4814&st=3&pos=3&query=Getting paid for items you've sold&intent=payout on demand&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1448#section2

This was in the eBay message received:

At eBay, we’re committed to making our policies clear and our services easy to use. We wanted to let you know that we’re updating our Payments Terms of Use, effective from November 4, 2026. We’re also updating our Spendable Funds Terms and Conditions and renaming them the U.S. eBay balance Terms and Conditions.
eBay balance is becoming the default for eligible U.S. sellers. As we roll out this change:
• Enrollment will be automatic. If you’re eligible and not already enrolled, you’ll be enrolled after we verify your identity, without a separate sign-up. Your sales proceeds, after any applicable deductions, will go into your eBay balance.
• Payouts will default to on-demand. This will replace any existing automatic payout schedule. However, you can still choose automatic payouts on a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule.
• You can choose to shop with balance. You can use your balance for eligible eBay purchases and selling expenses.
Continuing to use our payment services on or after November 4, 2026 means you accept the changes. If you do not agree to the proposed changes, you may terminate these Payments Terms of Use, pursuant to Section 10 (“Term, Termination”), at any time before November 4, 2026.

They're looking to make interest on your money and hoping folks will just leave it in their coffers.

Probably. But so what? They're telling people what they're doing and telling them how to set up their payouts so that there's no change in their current scheduling.

    Where is the con?

There is no con; it’s just a clever move since they know a large enough amount of people won’t notice and that will help eBay keep funds longer (plus earn interest on it or use them for other purposes).

eBay sent out notices about the change. The people who don't pay attention to them won't notice until the first time they see they didn't get their scheduled payout. Once they check to find out what happened and understand what's changed, they will be able to set up their payout schedule to work as before.

Seems like a big nothingburger to me.

I haven't sold on eBay in a long time. Are you saying that they hold your money and payment is no longer instant? If so, who is going to agree to that? That's absurd.

There is currently no such thing as an instant payout. You have the option to schedule a monthly, bi-weekly, weekly or daily payout. If you decide you want a payout right now, you can pay $2 for an express payout, which (eBay claims, but I have never used the feature so I don't know for sure) takes as little as 30 minutes. The other payout options are free.

There is one main change: The option to leave your money with eBay until you request it is being added to the scheduled payout options.

There is one minor change: If you have a current automatic payout scheduled, you will have to re-select the interval.

    Nothingburger.

How quickly can you request a payout from eBay? I hear about a week after auction end is worthy of high praise elsewhere.

From my post, which you quoted:

"You have the option to schedule a monthly, bi-weekly, weekly or daily payout."

edited to add, hit post too soon... my payouts on Tuesday morning include all sales through the previous Sunday. So- a day or so.

Two days is pretty darn fast.

I'd think so. Another auction firm does it in nine days and it's called "Super fast", so what's two days? "Hyperspeed fast"?

    Maybe "Ludicrous fast"?

If I sell something on Sunday, it ships on Monday and I get a payout on Tuesday.

Mine is set to daily, and it pays the day after I ship.

I also have over 25 years on the site, feedback over 8000 and $ 6 digit sales a year.

Thanks for the clarification. When you started talking about instant instant transfers v ACH, I thought you initially understood what I meant. That's not bad at all.

I think it's great! I didn't know you could schedule payouts. I always just received them soon as the buyer received the item and thought that was the only option. If I did, I'd choose to keep the money with eBayt anyway. I tend to buy more on eBay than I sell. I pay with PayPal, and it's a PITA having to transfer money from my bank account to PayPal. Plus, who is making interest on their bank accounts? Let me know and I'll open an account there. And don't tell me that 0.01% is interest. So with them holding the money, I can pay from eBay funds without the money having to move all over the internet. I can see if you're a dealer and have a large net income from eBay sales that this would not be happy, but I'd bet for the vast majority of folks this is a good thing. But then again I feel a little dumb for not looking into it earlier.

I don't really sense a con job here, based on my understanding of the change.

The con job occurred many years ago when eBay forced Pay-Pal down our throats and inspired me to leave them both far back in the rear view mirror. To this very day, I will have nothing to do with Pay-Pal.

OK, I just checked and right now there doesn't even seem to be an "on demand" option. So they've added that option, and made it the default. Excellent.

Anything beats the slow payment methods you used to get when you had to call around to major dealers/buyers, ship to them and wait, sometimes quite a while for payment. Paypal revolutionized many payment methods.

There are multiple money market accounts that you can find with 3%-4% interest that you can pair with a checking account (move enough to the checking to cover your expenses and keep the rest in the money market).

Also, you can link a credit card to your paypal account which earns 1%-3% cash back. As long as you pay the balance off every month, it’s better than using your bank balance or keeping the money at eBay (you earn interest on your funds at the money market and you get some cash back on your card).

My account is set to pay me weekly (most of my funds come early in the week, and I'd rather have fewer transactions to record than I would with daily payouts), but if there's money available, I can always hit the "pay now" button... on demand is definitely available now for use between scheduled payouts.

My problem with this change is that I'm currently set for scheduled payouts, and the email was unclear when I have to change that. Is there a day they'll undo my setting and make me change it again, or some point where my setting will just carry through without my input? If they let me hit a button right when I read the email, no problem. If they're telling me now and making me remember a few weeks from now, I'm not such a fan of that.
