REMEMBERING THE WORLD'S LARGEST NAVAL BATTLE THAT TOOK PLACE 82 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK FROM OCTOBER 23-26
This late October week, a year before World War II would end with a September 1945 surrender, the largest Naval Battle in History took place. The Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines established Allied Naval supremacy in the Pacific. It was also the first battle in which the Japanese used Kamikaze Pilots.
Among the ships engaged in the battle were the USS Reno, a model of which is displayed at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, and the USS Nevada. Alongside the USS Reno model is a piece of burned decking from the USS Nevada's having been attacked at Pearl Harbor.
Another World War II related exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. Note the banner with sewn stars which were presented to families who had children serving in the war. Each added star represe3nted a child serving.
