Non Members can now submit coins to PCGS

Batman23Batman23 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭✭✭

I see the fee schedule is posted for non collectors club members to submit coins for grading. I have seen some speculation and discussion about this within other threads but had not seen if it had been implemented or what the actual numbers were.

Fees are steep enough that if you wanted to submit more than a couple coins per year, you would want to obtain a membership. It also looks like grading tiers are very limited.

Perhaps more submitters would then allow PCGS the resources to hire more graders?

This is a good compromise for people wanting to just submit a few coins a year. I don't see this impacting workload measurably.

I cannot see this announcement causing a big influx of submissions. As the OP noted, at those prices you'd be better off finding a local dealer or signing up for a basic membership.

I dont see how this affects anything other than the person that has one expensive coin they inherited to get graded before they sell. Less of a headache for them, few more bucks for our host.

For those prices most would be better off using ANACS where the fees are far less and also no membership required.

I wonder if there will be an option presented with the eBay authenticity guarantee process for a graded certification on your raw coin's journey.

Or going through a dealer. I’m not sure this is as helpful as they think. I could see it turning potential future customers off from membership as well.

I just played with a non-member submission mockup putting in a couple of modern coins.

For non-members, Gold Shield is the only option. Three levels of Gold Shield.
Still has the $10 handling fee and the same return shipping rates.

If a person only had one or two or three coins to submit for the year, this would be a realistic option.
    $45 x2, +$10, +$27. Total $127 to submit two coins valued under $750 each.

I suspect that is the whole purpose of opening up that option and if other non-Ebayers use it, then that is fine with them for bringing in more money.

There is a finite number of people qualified to professionally grade at hire. I imagine that qualified labor supply and not necessarily capital expenditure is rate limiting here.
